Whitland's decisive win over Rumney at Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn kept alive their hopes of gaining a place in next season's Premiership. It was Rumney who opened the game with a fine try - Grant Harrington drove froma lineout and started an excellent handling movement which swept from one side of the pitch to the other, creating a big overlap and resulting in Captain Christian Wills crossing in the corner for the touchdown. After thirteen minutes The Borderers scored their first try through full back Wayne Lewis and a close first half saw Whitland leading by 13 - 5 at the interval.
The second half was dominated by the home side who scored four tries in eighteen minutes. For Whitland, centre Mike Buckingham, No8 Johnny Koloi, fly half Daniel Griffiths and Daniel Rogers all collected tries and Griffiths was also on top form with his placekicking, succeeding with four conversions and two penalties. Late in the game winger Ian McIntyre scored for Rumney from a quickly taken penalty.
Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "After a great start to the game, scoring a very good try, we allowed Whitland back into the game. We pressed their line for long periods during the first half but were guilty of a number of wrong options and pressure was not turned into points. The opposition scored a try from the restart at half time and from this point we seemed to lose our way. In fairness to Whitland they played some attractive rugby. We now move to our home game with Tredegar. Rumney's Man of the Match was Paul Langley."
Mark Waygood, Coach Whitland RFC 1st XV : "It was the best performance that we have put together all season. We moved the ball quickly, ran strongly, supported well and finished off clinically. If we can keep playing like that a place in the top seven is possible."
