The Steve Ford XV went on the attack from
the start and in the fifth minute a neat threequarter movement involving Joe
Deacon, Tom Daley and Anthony Jones led to winger Lincoln Plummer crossing for
the first try. Deacon's superb conversion put his side 0 - 7 ahead and although
the Wales Deaf XV were having to soak up all the forward pressure, they gradually
worked their way upfield where a brilliant break by Barry No8 Matthew Campbell
led to Cwmbran winger Chris Haddock picking up a loose ball and forcing his
way over in the corner. In the twenty second minute the Wales Deaf XV again
worked their way into opposition territory where Dunvant outside half Richard
Lewis slotted a penalty, before Deacon also replied with a penalty to bring
the score to 8 - 10. Snappy play by Llanharan scrum half Ryan Phillips helped
the Wales XV to hold their ground but play was still mostly in their half of
the field and in the thirty sixth minute the Select XV No8 Michael Kelly burst
from the base of a scrum, setting up second phase for Deacon and Jones who recycled
the ball for flanker Matthew Way to cross under the posts. Deacon converted
but there were now signs that the Wales Deaf XV were gaining more forward control
and in the fortieth minute Phillips took a quick tapped penalty and set up Birchgrove
hooker James Evans for a try and a half ti

The Wales Deaf XV began the second half in a more dominant mood, spending far more time in opposition territory and when UWIC's Michael Catris intercepted a loose pass, he started another good passing movement which was finished off with a long run in by Corus flanker Andrew Healey, Lewis's touchline conversion putting his side back into the lead at 20 - 17. The remainder of the second half was an equally contested affair with most play now in the Select XV half of the field, and in the sixty second minute the Wales forwards took a scrum against the head allowing Lewis to work Tonna fullback Gareth John clear for a well taken try. The final quarter was full of exciting play from both sides but there were no further scores, and the Man of the Match award went to Wales Deaf and Rumney forward Adam Brake.
