Rumney Man of The Match : Ian Blackburn
Rumney spent the early part of the game firmly camped in the Treorchy half with the home side attempting to break out and often conceding penalties. The visitors looked very controlled and confident and were immediately playing in expansive style, dominating the scrums and setting up forward breaks by Chris Jones, Rhodri Hanmer and Andrew Gardner with Ryan Sutton and Mark Harrington taking charge of the line outs. Behind the pack half backs Gethin Tattersall and James Macdonald were again in fine form with all the three quarters finishing well and winger Henry Amadife looking particularly sharp in attack and defence. After fifteen minutes flanker Sutton took clean, long ball in a line out on the Treorchy ten metre line and Tattersall linked quickly with mobile No8 Chris Jones who set up the maul from which lock Gardner suddenly emerged and burst for the line. Prop Charlie Gale was on hand for an inside pass and the speedy forward, who had an outstanding debut for the Rumney 1st team, cleverly flicked the scoring pass up to flanker Carl Barker for the opening try.
Although the visitors' pack was still on top, the Treorchy forwards enjoyed a period of attacking pressure and outside half Adam Moore landed a penalty to bring the score to 3 - 5. Rumney fly half Macdonald was constantly pegging the opposition back with tactical line kicking and from a penalty, drove play to the Treorchy five metre line. Hooker Michael Feneck's throwing in was accurate throughout the match and he again found Sutton flying high in the middle of the lineout. Tattersall's snap pass to Macdonald allowed the outside half to send out a long ball to impressive centre Ian Blackburn, who in turn fired out a long pass to full back Paul Nash and when he linked with Amadife, the winger's blistering pace took him over in the corner for a brilliant try, which stemmed from the well planned original set piece. Tattersall's difficult conversion put his side further ahead at 3 - 12.
When Treorchy indiscipline gave Rumney a penalty in their own twenty two, Gardner immediately tapped and went, feeding Sutton and putting centre Ian McIntyre through a narrow gap. McIntyre's brilliant thrust took him along the touchline to the opposition twenty two where he neatly chipped ahead for Sutton to gather the touchdown, and withTattersall providing another quality conversion the score rose to 3 - 19 after twenty five minutes. Treorchy hit back with more forward pressure and their best period of the game resulted in a good try for hooker Nathan Huish, but further advances tended to be snuffed out by the ferocious tackling of Gale, Hanmer, Gardner and Blackburn, and with Harrington and Sutton taking opposition ball in the lines, the home side was unable to add any further points before half time.
From the restart Treorchy succeeded in keeping play close to their pack, utilising their forward skills in the tight but strong counterattacks by winger Liam Maqueline and Hanmer relieved the pressure and when the Rumney forwards pushed Treorchy back yards in a scrum, Blackburn made fifty metres from a blistering break. Barker also tore the opposition defence to pieces when he ripped the ball out of a loose maul and raced from his own half into the Treorchy twenty two where he set up a ruck. The sweeping three quarter movement which came from this good possession found Amadife slicing through the centre and linking with Nash and putting Maqueline away or another well taken try.
The home side again played to their forward strength but a loose chip ahead was picked off by livewire Tattersall who immediately saw the possibilities and launched an attack from within his own twenty two which saw Amadife cruise past would-be tacklers to take play the length of the field, allowing Barker to set up a neat pass to McIntyre for the centre to finish off the try. With the score now standing at 8 - 29 Treorchy regathered and set up a ruck deep in the visitors' twenty two from which they unexpectedly switched to the left with winger Scott Davies dummying through before supplying Adam Hall with the try scoring pass. A good conversion by Lee Stone brought the scores back to 15 - 29 before more accurate lineout work by Feneck and Sutton set off another slick threequarter movement with Tattersall and Macdonald feeding McIntyre on the burst and the big centre crashing through five tacklers to score a further outstanding try under the posts. An injury to Hanmer led to his replacement by Nathan Trevett who maintained Rumney's forward power and Michael Kelly brought new energy into the pack, but a cloudburst and torrential rain changed the nature of the game and although Treorchy added another converted try by Thomas Hetherington, Rumney tightened play and contained the home side for the remaining minutes, with Huw Williams' whistle concluding the proceedings and the final score reading Treorchy 22 Rumney 36.
Dave
Escott, Rumney RFC : "A good performance and full credit
to Treorchy, who never gave up. Rumney is a completely new side
and there are lots of plusses with the youngsters coming of age.
The coaches must take a lot of credit for preparing the team for
this excellent start to the season. The players were well drilled,
their handling was good and that was the best support play I have
seen for years. All the forwards played very well, Carl Barker
was outstanding and Ryan Sutton and Mark Harrington dominated
the line outs."
Jim O'Brien, Rumney RFC : "A very good victory in trying circumstances and another learning curve for this young team. Things just keep getting better, the scrum is very solid, the half backs are playing particularly well and Ryan Sutton and Mark Harrington are performing wonders in the line out, both on our ball and the opposition's."
