Both sides indulged in loose play, dropped passes and gave away possession in the opening encounters of this match and although Tredegar looked the more dangerous side, Rumney initially kept them pinned in their own half. After fifteen minutes however, weak tackling allowed Tredegar centre Gareth Price to cut through for the opening try. Outside half Gareth Kearny added the points, but for the next quarter of an hour play was again mostly in the Tredegar half until a breakout by home No8 Leigh Taylor set full back James Wheeler away for a try under the posts. Kearny kicked the conversion and despite setting up a number of attacks, Rumney dropped more passes, conceded turnovers and gave away penalties for crossing, arriving at the interval 14 - 0 in arrears.

Rumney started the second half well with scrum half Ben Morris probing the defence in support of his driving forwards, and although Tredegar's marauding No8 Taylor was yellow carded, they still lost possession at vital moments. After fifty minutes Morris made a dazzling touchline break, taking play close to the home try line. Prop Dave Bartlett and hooker Neal Ritchie carried the ball on to a position two metres from the line and a neat inside flick from Morris put winger Ian McIntyre flying over for a try. Tredegar's reply was instant when lock Chris Edwards intercepted a loose pass and went the distance to score a good individual try. Kearny put the conversion over and soon added a penalty, and within five minutes Price scored his second try after a flowing three quarter movement, the conversion giving the home side a lead of 31 - 5. Rumney still managed to gain plenty of territory and from a line out on the opposition twenty two, Ryan Sutton's clean take allowed Morris to send out a long pass to centre Gareth Niblett who fed co-centre Stuart McIntyre with a well timed pass to put him through under the sticks. Outside half Carl Ford put the conversion over and five minutes later a strong forward drive by James Harris and Michael Feneck gave Morris the chance to repeat his inside flick to Ian McIntyre, who duly obliged by scoring a try very similar to his first. Tredegar hit back again with a late try by Austin Morgan and Price completed his hat trick by cutting through weak tackles for a try and conversion which gave his side their 43 - 17 victory.

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "A poor performance from the team, who thought they just had to turn up to win the game. In fairness to Tredegar they played some good rugby and fully deserved the win. From the start to the finish we made far too many errors and did not turn pressure into points. I hope that the squad will learn from this and realise that you have to go out and win the game, it does not just happen."

Jim O'Brien, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "Take nothing away from Tredegar, they deserved their victory. This ranks with the Whitland match as Rumney's worst game of the season and one to forget."
