It was a bright start to the game from Rumney but although the opening quarter was played mostly in the Ystrad half, the home side was unable to turn opportunities into points until the twenty second minute when fullback Matthew Maclean landed an excellent forty metre penalty after the visitors held the ball on the floor. Three minutes later a huge kick from outside half Danny Clark took Rumney to the Ystrad five metre line and from the lineout hooker Michael Feneck ripped the ball from the opposition and raced over for a good individual try and an 8 - 0 lead. The visitors were developing an increasingly cotrolled performance, putting good moves together and spending more time in the Rumney half of the field, where the home side was tending to lose the ball in turnovers and giving away penalties. A high tackle gave Ystrad outside half Dylan Jones the chance to get points on the board and his successful kick brought an interval score of 8 - 3.

Ystrad started the second period in attacking mood and Jones soon added a second penalty for offside before the forwards used a controlled drive to score the converted try which put them into an 8 - 13 lead. With Rumney taking desperate measures and being driven back by careful line kicking, Jones added another penalty for killing the ball and Ystrad crossed twice more for tries which extended their lead to 8 - 23. Sweeping movements involving forwards and backs brought Rumney back into the game when Andrew Gardner, Nathan Trevett and Anthony Jones set up a spectacular try which was well finished off by Neal Ritchie, and Ben Morris and Gethin Tattersall worked a neat blindside move to put winger Dan Clements haring in for an equally good score. Tattersall's conversion brought the score back to 20 - 28 but in injury time Rumney were penned in their own twenty two and Ystrad grabbed an interception try and conversion for a final total of 20 - 35.

Gafyn Cooper, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "When we stuck to the game plan we looked effective, were dangerous and scored tries. Rumney's kicking game was poor and Ystrad took their chances well, played a territorial game and deserved their win. A missed opportunity for Rumney. The Man of the Match was Nathan Trevett."

Jim O'Brien, Rumney RFC : "Ystrad Rhondda is the best side to visit Riverside Park this year, they used the conditions better than Rumney and recorded a deserved victory. Nathan Trevett was outstanding and Ryan Sutton commanded the lineout."
