The two sides with the best reputations
for running rugby in Division One, met on a rainsoaked Riverside Park where
the inclement weather persisted all afternoon but nevertheless failed to put
a damper on an exciting and entertaining game. Rumney started well with No8
Adam Brake powering forward and the UWIC pack going backwards but accurate linekicking
from visiting outside half Simon Humberstone and fullback Tom Hancock kept the
home side at bay. In the tenth minute a well controlled drive by the UWIC forwards
gave Humberstone some space and he dropped a neat goal from twenty five metres.
Most of the play was still taking place in the UWIC half, Rumney flanker Ryan
Sutton providing a steady supply of lineout possession, scrum half Chris Milton
urging the forwards on and the pack camping deep in opposition territory. In
the nineteenth minute, with the College conceding a series of penalties, Brake
drove wide from a scrummage and supported by flanker Matthew Way, crashed over
for the opening try, fly half Joe Deacon's conversion putting his side ahead
by 7 - 3. Despite the rain, both sides tried to play open rugby and Rumney Captain
Paul Niblett and wing Andrew Carlson were proving difficult to contain, as a
result of which Deacon put over a twenty fifth minute penalty to stretch the
lead. For the home side good line kicking by centre Luke Ford and tackling by
wing Lincoln Plummer stopped UWIC from spending much time in the Rumney half,
and full back Tom Daly showed his attacking prowess with long runs from deep
positions. The home defence was solid with props Charlie Gale and Craig Fitzpatrick
and hooker Michael Feneck dominating rucks and mauls, while second rows Terry
Gee and Michael Kelly maintained th
e forward thrust, supported by speedy flankers Way
andSutton. As the interval approached the UWIC forwards started to work as a
more cohesive unit, Captain and second row Alex Thomas leading from the front
and the constant threat from the College backs was made clear when winger Jonny
Wehbe sliced through midfield on a weaving run. It was the wing himself who
started a movement that was carried on by mobile hooker Jordan Allers, and from
the second phase Humberstone launched a clever cross kick which Wehbe gathered
cleanly and finished off sprinting in at the corner, the try resulting in a
half time score of 10 - 8.
The second period started with a wave of UWIC attacks which were initially stemmed by the Rumney defence but at the cost of a series of penalties. Daly produced another excellent counterattack, as did Ford and Carlson when they combined to sprint down the left wing, Kelly continued to impress in the centre of the field and the arrival of prop John Leadbeatter and forwards Paul Bull and Anthony Wilson added fuel to the boiler house, but in the sixty third minute Rumney were penalised for hands in the scrum and Humberstone put his side back into the lead with a well struck goal. Scrum half Chris Miller and hooker Michael Catris took the field and gave new attacking power to the home side, but in the seventieth minute Humberstone kicked a second penalty and despite strong finishes from both teams, there was no further scoring and the College completed the double over Rumney, running out winners at 10 -14.
Mike Peard, Forwards Coach Rumney 1st XV : "In the short turn around since our defeat by UWIC, we obviously knew how organised they were, particularly in defence and we trained around that and put in place a game plan that would take the weather into account and allow us to win. We played exactly to the plan for thirty minutes of the first half and in the last ten we stepped off the gas, we started playing from the wrong areas and the loose play let them in for a soft try before half time. I am really disappointed in view of the effort we put in, in the second half we went back to the game plan but ended up losing 10 - 14 which is down to that period before half time. Our set piece was superb, particularly the scrummage and the lineout was ok, though we did mess up a few. I was really pleased with the effort everyone put in, this young group of players is learning weekly, a neutral might say that we were smashed ten days ago but today we got a useful bonus point. I am disappointed that we lost but UWIC stuck to their plan and took the points. Charlie Gale was the Man of the Match, Charlie works tirelessly in the scrums and all around the field."
Lincoln Plummer, winger Rumney 1st XV : "It was a close game and a better performance than the last time we played UWIC. We had chances to win it and were a bit unlucky. The forwards were excellent, the bad conditions were the same for both teams but we didn't finish our chances in the second half. Adam Brake was brilliant, Joe Deacon and Luke Ford are young players and they really helped us out, all the forwards had excellent games."
