A disasterous opening period found Rumney playing catch up rugby for the whole of the game, Llantwit Fardre having scored within two minutes when turnover ball allowed visiting outside half Michael Thomas to execute a neat break and send wing Ryan Morgan under the posts for the first try and conversion. Llantwit capitalised on Rumney errors to keep their hosts pegged back and in the eighth minute they extended their lead to 0 - 12 when a sweeping movement between forwards and backs saw centre Matthew Taylor cross in the corner. More errors, loose kicking and penalties allowed the visitors to territorially dominate until the twenty eighth minute when Rumney ventured to the Llantwit twenty two, flanker Ryan Sutton secured lineout possession and started a series of drives and three quarter attacks which ended with centre Anthony Jones taking three defenders over the line as he scored an oustanding team try. Llantwit again benefitted from Rumney errors and infield kicks, and put up a spirited defence when the home side attacked, but in the thirty fifth minute, following Rumney's best period of sustained pressure, they conceded a penalty and full back Luke Khan brought the score back to 8 - 12.
Khan was again in action straight after the interval when he produced a fine break, only to be stopped with a high tackle, but was ready to kick the points from the subsequent penalty, bringing his side to within one point at 11 - 12. The Rumney pack appeared to be getting the better of the visitors and home backs Khan, Jones and Matthew Miller offered penetrative runs, but Llantwit again took advantage of poor kicking to run the ball back, and full back Robert Kotyla put over a penalty to stretch the score to 11 - 15. Finding themselves pressurised into defensive positions, the visiting forwards used No8 Matthew Smith and outstanding flanker Simon Bayliss to carry from the base of the scrum and provide Thomas with good ball for his accurate and relieving line kicks. Rumney, on the other hand, showed individual flair with breaks by outside half Phil Carlton and Khan but also proved vulnerable to counterattacks, and try-saving tackles by scrum half Lee Miller and centre Barry Phillips prevented breakaway tries. In the sixty eighth minute, with time running out, Rumney attempted to move the ball out of defence and Kotyla intercepted to race in at the sticks, the conversion being the last score of the game and giving Llantwit Fardre victory by 11 - 22.
Stuart Coles, Captain and No8 Rumney 1st XV : "We started poorly and gave Llantwit Fardre a twelve point lead before we even started playing, then we woke up and came into the game but once again it was a case of not taking our chances. I think the effort that we put in against Newport Saracens on Tuesday night took a lot out of us and because our suad is so small, players who ideally would have been rested, had to play another eighty minutes and that showed in the last quarter. A special mention must be given to Ryan Sutton and to Colin O'Donoghue who did a great job, out of position at prop. All in all, the effort was excellent and thankfully we do not have a game on Tuesday so we can regroup and take a stronger side to Newport Saracens next Saturday. The Man of the Match was Ryan Sutton."
Phil Carlton, outside half Rumney 1st XV : "We started slowly and eventually got into the game and contested well for forty minutes, but Llantwit showed a bit of class and pulled away. We have plenty to build on and will gradually turn over sides at the top of the table. The whole pack played well today and the backs will come good too with a bit more patient, phased play."
