A slow opening period, full of mistakes, saw Rumney conceding penalties in the way they had done a week earlier at Central Park and Llantwit Fardre full back Ryan Morgan willingly stepping forward to kick them. In the first fifteen minutes the home side was penalised for offside, retalliation and holding the ball on the ground and each time Morgan succeeded with the place kicks to put his side into a 0 - 9 lead. For the opening quarter the packs tested each other out in an even contest and although Rumney threequarters Henry Amadife and Ian Blackburn made penetrating breaks and forwards Chris Jones, Nathan Trevett, Rhodri Hanmer and Michael Feneck carried play upfield, Rumney frequently conceded possession through poor kicking and passing. As the half progressed they became more settled and controlled, and in the thirtieth minute, following a fine break by flanker Carl Barker, Llantwit killed the ball and Rumney fullback Matthew Maclean slotted the points. Five minutes later lock Michael Kelly took clean ball at a line out and scrum half Ben Morris linked with outside half Danny Clark who fed Blackburn on the burst on the half way. The mighty centre tore through four tackles before passing out left to centre Paul Niblett who gathered well and finished off the try under the posts. Macleans's conversion took Rumney into a 10 - 9 interval lead.
Hopes of maintaining that revival were soon dashed when Llantwit winger Robert Kotyla was supplied with a good pass just inside his own half and he sprinted elusively for sixty metres to score a brilliant solo try. Rumney conceded further penalties and the increasingly confident Llantwit forwards proved strong on the counterattack taking play back into the home side's twenty two where No8 Richard Andrews set up a ruck from which outside half Michael Thomas jinked through for a try. Within three minutes Rumney had lost possession in a handling movement and danger man Kotyla raced in under the posts for a breakaway try, Morgan's conversion putting Llantwit into a 10 - 26 lead. In a disastrous fifteen minute period after half time Rumney had conceded three tries and despite a committed final quarter they were unable to break the visitors' defences and Llantwit became the first side to record a double over Rumney in the 2004 -2005 season.
Gafyn Cooper, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "Our worst second half display of the season, full of basic errors which is unusual for our players. We must not dwell on this one defeat and challenge to get back to our high standard, which we can do. A disappointing evening. The Man of the Match was Ian Blackburn."
Jim O'Brien, Rumney RFC : "In the first fifteen minutes we conceded nine points and then got back into it and led 10 - 9. In a mad fifteen minutes at the start of the second half Llantwit ran in three tries and the game was over, they thoroughly deserved their win. Michael Kelly, Chris Jones and Henry Amadife were outstanding tonight."
