Rumney's unbeaten record came crashing down when Llantrisant outside half Jason Alford landed five penalties and a conversion to put the visitors on course for their first league win at Riverside Park. Rumney started well with scrum half Ben Morris linking with No8 Chris Jones to force play into the Llantrisant half and outside half James Macdonald gaining ground with his line kicking. Wingers Henry Amadife and Matthew Maclean and centres Paul Niblett and Ian Blackburn all created strong bursts which kept play deep in the visitor's half for virtually the whole of the opening quarter of an hour. After fifteen minutes Maclean landed a penalty and in the seventeenth minute, when second row Mark Harrington's big leap at the back provided clean lineout ball, Morris launched the threequarters from inside his own half. Macdonald took the long ball well and fired out another long pass to Blackburn who split the defence, gained twenty metres and gave fullback Paddy O'Neill the ball he needed to race the thirty metres for a difficult touchdown in the corner.

With flanker Ryan Sutton, lock Michael Kelly and Harrington dominating the lineouts, Morris and Macdonald repeatedly set their backs away and Blackburn continued to break down the opposition defences, but there were signs that Llantrisant were slowly coming back into the game and after thirty minutes Alford kicked the first of his penalties when Rumney were guilty of handling in the loose. Maclean quickly replied with a successful long range penalty and in the thirty eighth minute, from another penalty award, Macdonald kicked his side into a good attacking position. Sutton again controlled the lineout well and a snap pass from Morris put Jones through on an excellent break. The mobile No8 linked with flanker Carl Barker who drove on further and with the opposition in disarray, Morris saw space on the blind side and switched left to put Amadife away on an unstoppable burst for a brilliant corner try. With the interval approaching there were more signs of Llantrisant as an attacking force, particularly the openings that No8 Dai Owen was creating, and Alford slotted another penalty to give a half time score of 16 - 6.

Llantrisant opened the second half in attacking mood and Alford immediately kicked a third penalty, and although the Rumney front row forwards Will Price, Michael Feneck and Neal Ritchie all made strong attacking moves, the home side repeatedly made unforced errors. From one of the many penalties awarded, visiting wing Kevin Oliver broke deep into home territory and from another penalty Alford drew the sides close at 16 - 12. The errors and penalties continued to flow and with Alford and outside half Huw Jones stamping more authority on the game, Rumney found themselves pegged back in their own half. After seventy minutes Lantrisant second row Nick Bush collected the ball at a five metre lineout and fed driving forward Dai John who duly forced his way over for the try. Alford's conversion took his team further ahead and he stretched the lead to 16 - 22 with another penalty in the seventy fifth minute. Rumney returned to form for the remaining eight minutes but were unable to penetrate the visitors' tight defensive line and David Williams' final whistle announced the home side's first defeat of the season.

Danny Wilson, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "In the first half we played reasonably well but we went off the boil in the second half. The basic problem occurred in the first thirty five minutes of the second half when we were trying to force passes that weren't on. In the last six or seven minutes we played in the way that we should have played for the whole half, so its back to the drawing board. Will Price played well and so did Chris Jones and Carl Barker."

Gordon Macdonald, Rumney RFC : "Basically Rumney had so much possession which they didn't convert into points that they let Llantrisant back into the game. Llantrisant's defence was very good, they kicked five of their six penalties and Rumney made lots of unforced handling errors that eventually cost us the game, but we are still up at the top."

Rob Regan, Rumney RFC : " After a great start we allowed Llantrisant back into the game. Indecision behind was the main problem and it allowed them to kick their goals. I thought we could have scored at the end but it wasn't to be. Chris Jones tackled well and Ian Blackburn in the centre was outstanding."
