Rumney took this game to Llantwit Fardre
from the very start with No8 Stuart Coles, flanker Matthew Way, scrum half Chris
Miller and wing Phil Carlton all attacking at the first opportunity and forcing
play into their opponents' half. Centre Anthony Jones added to his side's solid
advantage in midfield and with flanker Ryan Sutton making the most of loose
balls, and outside half Danny Clark gaining distance through long touchfinders,
Rumney camped deep in Llantwit Fardre territory for most of the opening period.
Home prop John Leadbeatter soon made a decisive break, taking his side deep
into the twenty two and although Llantwit managed to get the ball into touch,
Sutton's command of the lineout forced them to concede a penalty. Miller tapped
and fed prop Charlie Gale to set up an attacking ruck. Gale was to put in another
outstanding performance and Llantwit Fardre struggled all afternoon to contain
him, his control of the second phase allowing Miller to flip the ball to Leadbeatter
on the charge and the high powered pro
p sliced
through to give winger Carlton the try-scoring pass. Clark's excellent touchline
conversion gave Rumney a 7 - 0 lead but Llantwit came back strongly, effectively
using big second row Tony Davies in the lineout and with scrum half Gareth Morris
sniping and keeping play tight to the pack, they put pressure on their hosts
and gained territorial advantage. The Rumney defence was up to everything thrown
at them and Way took play back upfield with fine break out of defence, followed
by coordinated forward work from second rows Michael Kelly and Anthony Wilson
and hooker Michael Feneck. Sutton's continued dominance of the lineouts led
to Llantwit conceding further penalties and in the twenty fourth minute Clark
added three points through a well taken penalty but Llantwit continued to press,
Morris and outside Darrell Thomas maintaining close control and working to their
forward strength. Rumney again managed to repulse all threats, Coles clearing
from the back of scrums and counterattacking strongly, Feneck leading more forward
drives and Miller working the touchline with clever kicks until in the thirty
fifth minute when Sutton gathered in the line, fed Leadbeatter and closely supported
by Kelly and Gale, the opportunity arose for the half backs to spread it wide,
centre Paul Niblett providing the perfectly timed pass for full back Gareth
Bown to race through on an unstoppable burst to the line. Another successful
conversion took the score to 17 - 0 with five minutes remaining in the half.
Gale at tight head was by now causing major problems for the Llantwit front
row and it was from a secure scrum in the Rumney half of the field that Miller
broke on the blind putting Carlton away on
an elusive run leading to Sutton setting up successful second phase,
from which Clark split the defence and sprinted fifty metres before passing
to Andrew Carlson. The winger had played particularly well in defence and shown
good attacking skills at every opportunity, and this time he was not to be denied
as he took the ball on the twenty two and scorched in for an excellent try,
Clark's conversion putting Rumney 24 - 0 ahead at the interval.
Llantwit Fardre started the second half in far more determined fashion and within five minutes a tightly controlled, close range scrum resulted in Davies crossing for a try, Thomas adding the conversion and sparking the visitors' best period of the match. Morris adopted a slightly looser approach but still kept play mostly with the forwards, a successful tactic which gave Llantwit their second try, again coming from a scrummage, and this time it was influential flanker Dickie Andrews who claimed the touch down. Thomas added the conversion for a 24 - 14 scoreline but with Craig Fitzpatrick now at prop and Colin O'Dononghue at hooker, Rumney successfully contested all the midfield forward encounters and the introduction of dynamic lock Andy Morris tipped the balance back in the home side's favour. Morris' debut was a huge success, tearing massive gaps in the Llantwit defence he set up the platform for the backs to spread the ball. Both sides now opened up but Jones, Niblett, and Bowen sealed the midfield and O'Donoghue was only inches away from scoring a try when he ran a tapped penalty. The hooker was not to be denied though, and when Llantwit overthrew the ball at a defensive lineout, a grateful Sutton snapped it up to set off on an arcing run before providing the perfect inside pass to send O'Donoghue tearing over the tryline. Clark added the conversion and in the final five minutes more excellent defensive work by Bowen and Coles, and touchfinders by Clark ensured that Rumney cemented their lead, running out winners at 31-14 and securing their first league victory over Llantwit Fardre.
Steve Ford, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "In training this week we prepared for the game knowing exactly what we were going to do. We knew that Llantwit Fardre were heavy up front and we were going to play high tempo rugby against them with a solid set piece. That game plan worked in the first half and they could not live with us, basically we worked off good, clean, quick ball and it was the best forty minutes that we have played this season. We were streetwise, kicking to the corners and knowing when to go wide, we scored some superb tries. We knew that Llantwit would regroup at half time and then run it through the forwards, and they didn't disappoint us. Rumney had a quiet twenty minutes and Llantwit scored two tries, it can not always be flowing, fifteen man rugby, sometimes you have got to roll your sleeves up and dig in. We stuck to our guns, knowing that we had the upper hand so I wasn't worried when thay scored, I knew we would be ok because of the air of confidence that we now have, that's what winning does for you. All in all I am very pleased but I wish we could play rugby for longer periods, sides try to stop us playing and that is what Llantwit Fardre did today. It shows the character of the side and it was very pleasing that we didn't panic, we had maybe seventy five percent control of the game and were worthy winners. The Man of the Match was Ryan Sutton, before the game I asked Ryan to play a tight game and it was really effective today, it was his best game in a long time. Matthew Way also had a very solid game, his tackling and work rate is second to none, he has now had a good run in the First XV and has settled in well. Anthony Wilson did very well on his first team debut and Andy Morris has something special about him, he is abrassive in the tackle, runs well on the gainline - I haven't seen a performance anything like his this season, it was immense and he is a player of really high quality.
On a personal level, on Friday night I went to Stradey Park to see my son Luke Ford playing for Wales Under 19s against Ireland and I would like to thank all the people from Rumney RFC who travelled to Llanelli, I want to thank every single one of them ! "
Andrew Carlson, winger Rumney 1st XV : "It was a controlled performance by the pack which brought out good running play from the back row and the centres and in the end we ground out the win. The try I scored came from an excellent handling movement, it was well worked from the lineout and Danny Clark put me in at the corner, setting us up in good stead for the next two tries. Matthew Way was very strong around the park today, Andy Morris played well when he came on and Anthony 'Willow' Wilson did well in his first First XV game."
