Scorers for Rumney : C.Wills try, C.Day penalty
Llandovery maintained their lofty position in second place of the Lloyds TSB Division One table with a win over Rumney at Riverside Park. The game had an electrifying opening when Rumney centre Stuart McIntyre broke out of his own twenty two to set off full back and captain Christian Wills for the opening try. Outside half Chris Day soon added a penalty to take the homeside into an 8 - 0 lead and for most of the first thirty minutes Rumney were camped deep in Llandovery territory, but further tries proved elusive as movements broke down through stray passes.
Two rapid tries from Llandovery, scored by scrum half Robert Walters and flanker Ceri Davies, rocked Rumney. Both tries were converted by Gareth Jones who also slotted a penalty and in the deteriorating conditions the bigger Llandovery pack took control of the forward exchanges. Centre Hermon Bosman added the Drovers' third try from a five metre scrum but the real turning point of the game came when a fine Rumney try by Stuart McIntyre was disallowed when the assistant referee reported an earlier off-the-ball incident. The Drovers sealed the win when full back Neil Clapham crossed in the final minutes.
Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "Some
good rugby played in patches, we had territorial advantage in
the opening stages and should have built a heavier lead. We created
scoring opportunities but did not finish them off, this allowed
the opposition to get back in the game. It is quite apparent why
Llandovery are second in the table, they always try to play attractive
rugby and turn pressure into points. Man of the Match for Rumney
was Neil Coles."
Richie
Elliott, WRU Referee and former hooker Rumney RFC 1st XV :
"For the first thirty minutes Rumney took the game to Llandovery
and played particularly well. It was a very physical match but
very fair. While Rumney were 8 - 18 down they had a try disallowed
for an earlier infringement and the decision changed the game.
Llandovery came back strongly then and though Rumney were still
in it they didn't regain their momentum and Llandovery scored
two tries which saw the game off."
