Fleur de Lys took the field with a very strong wind behind them and started well through a series of lively attacks but Rumney immediately showed their intention to play fifteen man rugby with fullback Tom Daly running out of defence, wing Lincoln Plummer counterattacking and second rows Emyr James and Michael Kelly gaining ground in midfield. Fleur adopted a well constructed and lively forward platform with No8 Matthew Lawrence impressing from the base of the scrum, but gradually the Rumney pack settled and began to dominate with No8 Adam Brake and centre Paul Collett testing the opposition defence and scrum half Chris Milton coming close to scoring. In the twenty second minute home flanker Matthew Way gained clean possession in a lineout, leading to a tight forward drive, finished off with the touchdown by prop Craig Fitzpatrick. Five minutes later Rumney flanker Paul Bull pulled off a neat chip and chase, taking play back to the Fleur de Lys line where a solid scrummage led to prop Matt Russell and Brake powerfully supporting Fitzpatrick as he continued his outstanding performance by crossing for his second try. Leading 10 - 0 the home side were now attacking from all positions, Captain Paul Niblett starting good threequarter movements and bringing fullback Tom Daly, winger Andrew Carlson and Collett into the line and cutting effectively through opposition tackles. In the thirty second minute, following a strong attacking period by Fleur de Lys when centre Richard Jones and outside half Brett Green showed their attacking abilities, Jones kicked a penalty which resulted in a half time score of 10 - 3.

Following the interval, home forwards James and Russell and hooker Michael Feneck contributed more battering runs while Fleur replied with rapid counterattacks, both wingers coming close to scoring. The constant controlled possession by the Rumney forwards created multiple phases of play and in the fiftieth minute Milton threw an enormous dummy, making fifteen metres before passing to Feneck who was in the perfect supporting position to collect and score. Outside half Luke Ford, who had been expertly controlling the game in the first half and whose huge touchfinders were now gaining vast amounts of ground, put over the conversion. Home forwards Russell, James, Bull and Fitpatrick enjoyed sufficient space to launch snappy handling movements but in the fifty fourth minute Fleur de Lys produced a superb handling movement of their own which was stopped illegally just short of the tryline, at which point Jones tapped the ball and dived over for a well deserved try. Rumney's reply was instantaneous, Russell securing possession from the restart and Ford breaking from half way to score a staggering solo try under the sticks. The outside half converted his own try and was soon again orchestrating play, Milton finding huge gaps and Brake bursting from the back row, and forwards Charlie Gale and Andrew Wilson taking the field to consolidate the home side's domination of the loose. In the sixty fifth minute, and following another period of concerted pressure by Fleur, Niblett and Carlson brought off crunching tackles in their own twenty two, gaining turnover ball and allowing Milton to set Plummer away on a seventy metre try scoring sprint. Three minutes later a loose Rumney pass was intercepted by Jones who hared off on a thirty metre race to the line and brought the score to 31 - 13 but the homeside again came back with another excellent handling session involving forwards and backs, finished off with a remarkable try-scoring break by Man of the Match Brake. Fleur de Lys continued to mount attacks and take risks and in the seventy fourth minute Wilson intercepted and ran sixty metres before supplying Plummer with the final pass for his second try, Ford's conversion concluding the scoring at 45 - 13.

Steve Ford, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "We knew that today's game was a really important one for us and hearing that Christian Wills and Rhys Hallett were out injured, we knew that Fleur de Lys would be forward orientated. Our game plan had to be to play fifteen man rugby and with the grounds stiffening up, it will suit us over the next few weeks. Our set piece was good, we started off well with very positive scrums and lineouts, and after a few phases there were lots of missmatches in midfield and we tried to run them ragged but we did make mistakes. In the first half we made twelve errors because we were trying things, playing high risk rugby, but we were very confident when we turned round with the wind in the second half and I always knew we would be alright. We stuck to the gameplan and it worked, we scored seven tries and we can take a lot of confidence from this game but we have still got a lot to play for. Special mentions go to Chris Milton, Luke Ford who is back after ten weeks and to Captain Paul Niblett who also returned from injury, there were a lot of positives today. Adam Brake carried and tackled well all through the game, he never gave up and was the Man of the Match."

Matthew Way, flanker Rumney 1st XV : "Our preparation was good, all the boys were focused on getting the win which put us safe from relegation. The front row played well and Emyr James was great in the lineout., it was hard work in the hot sun but we ground out the win and the bonus points."
