Rumney could not have wished for a better start when, from the kick off, No8 Stuart Coles scooped up a bouncing ball, burst through the opposition and set up a ruck from which scrum half James O'Sullivan linked with charging prop Nathan Trevett and then fired out a perfect pass to outside half Danny Clark who set off on a devestating break to put centre Paul Niblett away and finally set up winger Paddy O'Neill to finish of the opening try in less than a minute. From the restart lock Michael Peard showed that he would be extremely difficult to stop on the charge and assisted by Coles and flanker Andy Morris, made deep inroads into the Croesyceiliog half where, in the fifth minute, Clark slotted a penalty for an 8-0 lead. The visitors quickly settled and for long periods they lodged in a corner of the park close to the home try line, keeping the ball tightly in the forwards until flanker Gavin Howells concluded a series of tight drives with a well taken try. The Cockerels pack was soon on the offensive again and were only kept out by determined tackles by flanker Ryan Sutton and prop Craig Fitzpatrick, and despite the visitors' ability to keep the ball and apply pressure, Morris, hooker Michael Feneck and second row Emyr James found enough space and possession to push play back into the Croesyceiliog half. From a lineout Sutton set up a forward drive and O'Sullivan provided his accurate speedy delivery allowing Niblett to again split the defence and supply O'Neill with a try scoring pass. Wing Andrew Carlson put over an excellent conversion to put Rumney into a 15 -5 lead but in the thirty fifth minute after a further lengthy period in their favoured corner, Croesyceiliog created another well controlled, tight forward drive and Howells claimed his second try. The teams reached half time with the visitors keeping play tight and Rumney attempting to put the ball wide at every opportunity.

Croesyceiliog's outstanding player, wing forward Howells, came out of the trap at the restart with a superb break and was only stopped a metre from the tryline. Mr Perkins awarded a penalty and centre Matthew Edwards caught the defence sleeping, pouncing over from close range for a snap try which he converted himself and put his side into the lead at 15 -17. By pushing the ball wide whenever possible Rumney were looking increasingly dangerous, centre Gareth Bowen and full back Phil Carlton finding big gaps and Colin O'Donoghue and Trevett making huge gains against their less mobile counterparts, and in the forty eighth minute Sutton showed his continued mastery of the lineout, setting off O'Sullivan and Niblett on a movement which led to Carlson crossing for a try. Having again slipped behind, Croesyceiliog came back strongly and more controlled forward pressure led to a sixtieth minute try by No8 Tim Hanks, Edward's conversion restoring their lead to 20 - 24. Four minutes later however Rumney struck back when good lineout possession by James started Clark off on another brilliant break and Carlson dummied through to finish another fine try. Lock Michael Kelly, prop John Leadbeatter and centre Anthony Jones took the field and their pace caused even more gaps to appear, allowing Clark to find space enough to slot a top quality drop goal and Feneck to run in a well constructed try in the seventy fourth minute. The mobility of the home forwards and the threat posed by their backs kept Rumney in a dominant position throughout the final period, and a particularly hard fought match came to an end with the scoreboard reading Rumney 33 Croesyceiliog 24.

Steve Ford, Coach Rum ney 1st XV : "We knew how important this game was because it was one of our games in hand and was at home, and we knew that it was going to be tough because Croesyceiliog beat Rhydyfelin last week. The build up and preparation were good so we decided to play an open game as we were aware of the strength of their pack. It started well and we scored a try in the first minute but that could have been our downfall because after that we had very little possession and Croesyceiliog sent their forwards into the breakdowns and stopped us playing, they scored a try and I knew we had a game on our hands. They ran it through the forwards for ninety percent of the game, never letting it past the outside half, and taking us on up front. We couldn't get any ball and Croesyceiliog turned us over at least seven times, you can't afford that but it proved how good we actually are and as soon as the ball went out we made all the yardage. Our game plan was to put it wide and we scored some lovely tries, it was a bit of a learning curve and maybe brought us down a peg or two. We've got to play a lot of rugby this season and a good, tough game like this proved to us that we've still got to work hard and personally, I think that our mental attitude lets us down at times, sometimes we think that we are already promoted and it's far from the truth. All the teams in this league are strong and initially this game was the same as the Llantrisant one, none of the sides can take us on at fifteen man rugby, but we have got to be streetwise and play to our strengths. Michael Feneck had a really strong game today, he carried well and his defence was great. Andrew Carlson played very well on the wing, he is a big assett to us, he plays on the edge and can turn a game in a second. Stuart Coles had a big carrying game too, he is another great assett who is playing very well and has the kind of experience that you can not buy. The Man of the Match was Paul Niblett."

Paul Niblett, Captain and centre Rumney 1st XV : "It was important to get three points, we wanted a better performance than we put in against Llantrisant and it came in patches, we looked good and sharp especially behind, where we had the edge. There are a few things we need to look at such as keeping the ball more, we got caught today and we need to put in the donkey work. It was a good win and we have to keep on our winning streak, putting a good run together. Stuart Coles carried very well tonight and Andrew Carlson was very sharp with the ball in his hands."
