A lively attacking start by Rumney was soon
curbed by the Croesyceiliog forwards and most of the opening quarter took place
in the home half of the field with visiting outside half and captain Matthew
Entwistle kicking a penalty after ten minutes. Rumney outside half Andrew Carlson,
prop Paul Douglas and hooker Michael Feneck all created good attacking breaks
but the Croesyceiliog pack continued to dominate play, forcing penalties, and
in the twentieth minute Entwistle added a second successful kick to put his
side 0 - 6 ahead. The home backs th
reatened to break through on a number of occasions
with Phil Carlton, Matthew Miller, Joey Offside,Tom Daley and Paul Niblett all
finding gaps and in a better passage of play for Rumney, Ryan Sutton, Ryan Fenton
and Stuart Coles were proving difficult to stop, but infringments, errors and
loose kicks allowed The Cockerels to take play back upfield and powerful thrusts
from their No8 Jake Nash and full back David Davies were only stopped close
to the line. The Rumney scrum held up well in defence with Coles clearing effectively
from the back row and the half ended with Rumney again on the attack.
The second period began with more positive
play by Rumney and as Sutton's dominance of the lineout increased, Croesyceiliog
found themselves giving away penalties, allowing the home side to gain territory.
In the forty fifth minute more clean possession by Sutton made it possible for
the Rumney forwards to set up a solid, rolling maul with Coles, Feneck and lock
Jamie Braine working the open side until Carlson set off on a fine looping movement
which saw the outside half devestate opposition tacklers to score an excellent
corner try. Five minutes later Sutton again rose to secure quality lineout ball
for scrum half Chris Miller who saw a tiny gap and set off on a brilliant side
stepping run before supplying Sutton with the return ball for the flanker to
cross and put his team 10 - 6 into the lead. Tireless work from home props Charlie
Gale and Douglas, and locks Michael Kelly and Braine, kept Rumney ahead but
in the final quarter Croesyceiliog regained the upper hand and play was almost
entirely confined to the Rumney half of the field. With ten minutes to go, more
penalties resulted in Croesyceiliog keeping possession deep in the Rumney half
and close interpassing led to flanker Chris Williams brushing off tackles and
driving over for The Cockerels' only try of the game. Entwistle's successful
conversion took the score to 10 - 13 and that was how things remained as the
visitors again restricted possession and prevented Rumney from breaking out
in the closing minutes.

Steve Ford, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "In the first half we didn't have much territorial possession, we couldn't get out of our half or find any momentum, and we gave away so many penalties. I talked to the boys at half time and was fairly confident when we turned around. We started off very well and scored two fine tries but after that Croesyceiliog came back at us and the countless penalties cost us the game. It is very frustrating that we can not go through the phases, we have just got to work hard, not feel sorry for ourselves and put it right next week. The Man of the Match was Rumney captain Paul Niblett, basically for his defence, with Ryan Sutton having a big game today and running Paul very close for the award."
Michael Feneck, hooker Rumney 1st XV : "We started very slowly and a couple of sin binnings did't help us, but the forwards fought back, getting good ball for the backs to score quality tries, though the Croesyceiliog pack did play very well. Michael Kelly, Andrew Carlson and Tom Daley had outstanding games today."
