An ill disciplined start found Rumney six points down after
four minutes through two Matthew Entwistle penalties and with the visitors keeping
play in the home twenty two through good lineout possession and driving forward
mauls, a continuation of last November's pattern of play seemed to be on the
cards. In that earlier away fixture Croesyceiliog had inflicted the heaviest
defeat of the season on Rumney through forward powerplay and a very tight defence,
but a repeat of that grim outcome was to disappear when Rumney's first incursion
into the opposition twenty two led to flying lock Chris Jones charging down
a clearance kick and gathering to score a fine opportunist try. Centre Anthony
Jones soon followed his brother onto the scoresheet when outside half Danny
Clark and winger Joey Offside immediately took play back into Croesyceiliog
territory and Jones dummied his way through the defence for a good try. Clark
converted and when prop Nathan Trevett spotted a gap after the Rumney forwards
had completed a powerful drive, he burst through to touchdown and increase his
side's lead to 17 - 6 after fifteen minutes play. Chris Jones was finding huge
gaps and scrum half Ben Morris's sniping runs were leading to the visitors giving
away penalties and, following an offside decision, Clark added three more points
with an accurate long range kick. The lighter but mobile home front row of Trevett,
Michael Feneck and Charles Gale took full advantage of the firm conditions and
the back row of Ryan Fenton, Carl Barker and Will Price stretch
ed the visitors with
effective variations from the scrum and line. Rumney centre Ian Blackburn also
punched holes in the defence and on the half hour, tore upfield and passed out
wide where adaptable full back Gethin Tattersall gathered well and scored a
stunning try. Croesyceiliog again harnessed their forward strength and finished
the first half strongly, making increasing use of their highly effective back
row.
The half time score was 25 - 6 and the visitors resumed in confident mood, using close interpassing and keeping play with the pack. Rumney conceded a large number of penalties and were caught sleeping as Entwistle took a quick tap and darted over under the posts unopposed. The fly half added the conversion and Croesyceiliog brought the scores close together when they exploited the continuous penalty awards to exert pressure and work winger John Berrows clear for a quality corner try. Entwistle's conversion sailed over and the score was 25 - 20 with thirty minutes remaining, but ten minutes later home winger Paddy O'Neill hit the line superbly and burst through for a spectacular try which Tattersall converted to stretch the lead to 32 - 20. Five minutes later, in form lock Kelly finished off a good movement and after a further five minutes flanker Carl Barker rounded off the move of the game with a try which had taken his team the length of the pitch. Tattersall's conversion gave a 44 - 20 scoreline but Croesyceiliog hit back with more slick backrow work ending in a try for scrum half Wayne Powell and conversion by Joe Foster. Both sides battled to the end of an exciting and entertaining match, Tom Dickens, Luke Egan, Neal Ritchie and Terry Gee coming on for Rumney in the latter stages and Ian Morris's whistle brought proceedings to an end at 44 points to 27.
Danny Wilson, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "It was most important that we should gain a win and that is what we achieved. We scored some good tries going through three, four and five phases but we still have an issue with consistency of play. We played well but then we had some poor passages. Ian Blackburn and Anthony Jones combined well in midfield with Danny Clark and Nathan Trevett, Michael Kelly and Chris Jones put in strong forward performances with the back row also getting through plenty of work. The Man of the Match was Michael Kelly."
Jim O'Brien, Rumney RFC : "When we played rugby we were brilliant but we also suffered bad lapses. There were a number of lineup changes and overall it was a good performance."
Nathan Trevett, prop Rumney 1st XV : "In the last couple of games we have started really brightly and then twenty minutes in we all think we can offload everything and then we have twenty minutes when we are under pressure. Sometimes it takes two or three tries from the opposition for us to actually wake up and realise that we need to start playing the way we can. The try I scored today came from good lineout ball by Michael Feneck and Michael Kelly. We used a move we call 'Brownie' and the forwards drove seven or eight metres and I saw the gap, then it was a simple dive over in the corner. Michael Kelly was really good again today and Danny Clark and Paddy O'Neill on the wing played well. Charley Gale had a great game in his first match back after injury."
Carl Barker, back row Rumney 1st XV : "We started very slowly and let Croesyceiliog into the game, then the pack turned the screw with driving mauls but a flood of penalties let them back in, until we again stepped up a gear. Chris Jones, Ryan Fenton and Michael Kelly went well, Michael's catching from the kick off was outstanding. Everybody has to be at training on Tuesday - nobody missing !"
