Cardiff fullback Jamie Roberts, who played his junior rugby at Rumney and also appeared for the 1st XV, returned after a six month lay-off following a serious shoulder injury, and scored two spectacular tries against his home club with direct and powerful running. In a pulsating local derby Rumney went into an early lead through a Danny Clark penalty but after that they had to defend for most of the game as the Blue and Blacks (playing in scarlet jerseys ! ) attacked at speed from every part of the field. Cardiff winger Elgan Jones also grabbed two tries, and Owen Rutley and Dan Gravell scored one each, as did outside half David Evans, who joined the Arms Park side from Birmingham's Pertemps Bees this week. Evans also contributed a penalty and two conversions, but Rumney were keen to attack whenever they had possession, No8 Stuart Coles and hooker Colin O'Donoghue creating constant problems for the Cardiff defence and centre Phil Carlton coming close to scoring a try after an excellent break. The game was played in good spirit, with plenty of skillful passages and proved to be an exciting and entertaining match on a freezing night at Riverside Park.

Steve Ford, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "We knew Cardiff would be well organised, with a good set piece and that the game would have an intensity which we don't often experience. I told the boys to go out and play and enjoy themselves, and that's what we did, but Cardiff pinched some ball in the scrum and line and we had little set piece possession in the first half. All we did was defend but we never gave in and decided to run the ball when we should have been getting a bit of territory instead, you can't play off the backfoot against Cardiff. We need this type of high intensity game, some of the boys have not played at this level before and they enjoyed it, it was a valuable experience and a good learning curve."
