Scorers for Rumney : T.Daly try, D.Clark try and conversion
Scorers for Caerphilly : N.Gittings try, C.Thomas try, G.Miles try, S.Stankala try, R.Edwards 2 penalties and conversion
A shaky start for Rumney found them giving away turnovers, making errors and conceding penalties which undermined the good initial work of the forwards and in the eighth minute a high tackle presented Caerphilly outside half Rhys Edwards with a kickable penalty opportunity. Edwards duly slotted the ball between the posts for a 0 - 3 lead but the home side came back on the offensive with props John Leadbeatter and Matt Russell and hooker Michael Feneck exerting telling pressure in the set pieces and the loose. Home No.8 Simon Greedy as aggressive in attack and solid in defence, while full back Gareth Bowen and winger Andrew Carlson also threatened with strong bursts in mid field and although they were awarded a series of penalties, Rumney failed to put any points on the board, despite all their concerted forward drives. In the twentieth minute a mistake at a Rumney lineout allowed visiting second row Anthony Meads to gather and drive to the home twenty two where the ball was switched to the backs and full back Nathan Gittings crossed for the first try. Rumney flanker Ryan Sutton gathered superbly from the restart and Greedy linked well with scrum half Geraint Manning but more turnovers, poor passing and the tendency to give away penalties allowed Caerphilly to clear any danger and only excellent covering by winger Tom Daly and flanker Dyfrig Rees prevented scores. Home captain Paul Niblett led by example and produced a fine break in midfield, but Rumney's first half performance was littered with lost balls and poor kicks, added to which Caerphilly showed an ability to regularly rip away possession, and in the thirty seventh minute Edwards landed a difficult penalty to give a half time score of 0 - 11.
More powerful attacks from
second rows Michael Kelly and Joe Mills and a rampant Greedy were
followed by the awarding of further penalties to Caerphilly, who
carefully worked their way back upfield where, in the fifty second
minute, they secured a lineout and fed second row Chris Payne
who made good ground and set up a handling movement in which Edwards'
neat inside flick put winger Chris Thomas under the sticks. Edwards
added the conversion for a 0 - 18 lead but Rumney came back strongly
through tight play between Manning and the forwards and Greedy
and Rees worked the blindside well, Rees beeing unluckly to have
a try disallowed when Mr Jenkins ruled that he had lost possession
in the grounding. Russell had been causing problems for the opposition
front row all afternoon and this was continued by the arrival
of Craig Fitzpatrick at prop, and with Feneck and Rees constantly
probing, Manning drove the pack forward until good second phase
allowed Mills to charge through and set up the backs, and it was
Mills and Leadbeatter who supported outside half Danny Clark to
batter his way over for a try and conversion. Caerphilly's reply
was virtually instantaneous, gaining clean lineout ball they set
up a number of phases and scrum half Rob Phillips' rapid delivery
led to Edwards breaking the defence and sending centre Gareth
Miles in at the corner. Leading 7 -23, the visitors' tails were
up but another try saving tackle from Niblett and hard work by
relacements Neal Ritchie, Chris Miller, Anthony Wilson and Emyr
James lifted the hom
e side and they enjoyed another
good period with plenty of possession. In the seventy fourth minute
Sutton's great take in the line gave Miller time to fire out a
long ball to Clark who linked with Niblett to set Daly away and
the winger took a difficult pass to cut through tackles and score
in the corner. Still chasing the game, Rumney had to take chances
and in the seventy ninth minute Caerphilly left wing Steffan Sankala
intercepted a pass and raced the length of the pitch for the conclusive
score, the visitors finishing the match with a 12 - 28 advantage.
Michael Peard, Forwards Coach Rumney RFC : "We are obviously disappointed with the result but in fairness to Caerphilly they are the best and most well organised side that we have come up against, they were well drilled and turned us over in key positions, and their defensive line were up on their feet quickly when we ran at them. This is a young side and sometimes we keep making the same mistakes, we have talked about it but we are not quite putting it right.. Today we had lots of possession but then we threw it away by spinning it out wide with silly passes. On three occassions Caerphilly came into our half and scored each time from our mistakes. We are creating opportunities and not finishing them off, our set piece was good but we must make the right decisions when we are playing. Ryan Sutton was superb in the lineout and in his general play around the field. The Man of the Match was John Leadbeatter, he is a young man who does a lot of unseen work, he is the cornerstone of our pack and he led the forwards well putting Caerphilly under a lot of pressure."
Joe Mills, second row Rumney 1st XV : "Caerphilly were very well organised and the best side we have played. We did well at the set piece but didn't set up phases afterwards, the pack was good today and I thought we lost it by not having enough runners off nine and ten, and trying to spread it too early. Ryan Sutton was excellent and John Leadbeatter scrummaged very well."
