A full strength Rumney side carried on in the style it had showed in its two previous games and was immediately pressing Brynmawr and forcing penalties. When home outside half Danny Clark kicked for position, flanker Ryan Sutton took clean lineout ball and slipped it to prop Paul Douglas who drove over for the opening try in the fifth minute. Clark put over the difficult conversion and despite strong resistance by Brynmawr prop Dan Preece, second row Kuli Falateu and winger Richard Dennington, Rumney were soon on the attack again with No8 Michael Kelly ripping possession and starting an impressive seventy metre handling movement, and it was Kelly who set up their second try when he broke from the base of a scrum and put Sutton away to touchdown under the posts. Trailing 14 - 0 after twenty minutes, the visitors showed plenty of attacking flair with flanker Manu Tuipoloto and centre Nolan Nicklin appearing as obvious danger men, but Rumney had firm control of the midfield through Douglas, Kelly and flanker Ryan Fenton, with prop Charley Gale and second row Emyr James running through tackles and setting up handling movements with the backs.
Half an hour into the match, Rumney used
an attacking scrum to spread the ball to the threequarters, finding winger Matthew
Miller on the burst, and with a switch by Fenton to centres Paul Niblett and
Anthony Jones, the final pass reached Clark, who touched down, converted his
try and added a penalty three minutes later to take the score to 24 - 0. For
their fourth try Kelly again took clean ball from the restart, put Niblett away
on a forty metre burst and Clark again finished it off with a thirty five metre
sprint, followed by the conversion. With so much o
pen play
the occasional lapse was inevitable and when a spilled ball fell into the hands
of Brynmawr wing Richard Dennington, the sprinter covered seventy five metres
to score under the posts, outside half Steve Lang's conversion making the score
31 - 7.
Rumney's fifth try started with excellent work by James who stole possession for the backs to again take off, this time Matthew Miller making the decisive midfield break before linking with Niblett, hooker Colin O'Donoghue, scrum half Chris Miller, No8 Chris Jones, full back Luke Khan and finally try scorer, wing Joey Offside.
Trailing 36 - 7 at the interval, Brynmawr came out on the attack and a well executed move found hard working second row Kuli Falateu crossing for a try, Lang adding the points for a 36 - 14 scoreline but within five minutes Rumney were awarded a penalty and livewire scrum half Miller was off, setting up winger Miller for another midfield burst, straightened up by Gale and Offside and concluded by Michael Feneck with his side's sixth try. Clark converted and was immediately in action again with a stunning sixty metre break out of defence leading to a lineout where second row Jamie Braine and Chris Jones conspired well at the back to spread the ball wide, before scrum half Miller switched back and found O'Donoghue, who evaded three tacklers for a fine try. One hour into the game, Chris Miller delivered quick ball from the scrum and Clark devestated the opposition defences, handing on to battling centre Anthony Jones whose excellent close support work was rewarded with the touchdown. Scrum half Miller's astonishing performance seemed to have been ended by a late, high tackle, but from the resulting penalty he tapped and went, crossing the tryline without having another finger laid on him.
Versatile hooker Neal Ritchie came on for Rumney and was soon in the action at a Brynmawr scrum deep in the home side's territory. Tuipoloto broke well from the base but Chris Jones intercepted possession and rampaged upfield linking with Niblett whose switch inside was taken up by Ritchie and Gale, before Sutton, O'Donoghue, Anthony Jones and Offside showed their interpassing skills to put Sutton away again for his second try, perhaps the outstanding movement of many during the afternoon. Ritchie and Gale were now running like extra threequarters, and in the seventieth minute a long pass from Clark found O'Donoghue out wide where the powerful forward capped a superb performance by plucking the difficult ball out of the air and sidestepping his way to the line for his second try. Now leading 74 - 14 and against a Brynmawr side which had played hard all through the match, Rumney were still not finished and from the restart O'Donoghue and Gale secured good possession which Clark used to race thirty metres before handing on to Matthew Miller for the twenty metre dash to the corner and the final try. Clark's touchline conversion brought the closing score to 81 - 14, Rumney's staggering last performance of the season bringing the 2005-2006 campaign to a close with a respectable final league position and a clear indication of how very strong they will be next year.
Steve Ford, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "Having a full side out today, we proved exactly what we are capable of. We totally dominated every area and all the set pieces, working off the set piece is half the battle. We had to sign off on a good note, we played entertaining rugby with a skill level up to premiership standard. We looked dangerous every time we had the ball and tried so many different things, scoring absolutely outstanding tries. When you have a game like that it can get scrappy but we kept our shape and with Danny Clark at No 10 we ran seventy or eighty metres. Charley Gale was exceptional today and Colin O'Donoghue ran riot, they were a big plus for us and it is nice to end the season on a high. It has been a long hard season and I am pleased for the boys, there has been a lot of pressure on us over the last week but we won three out of three games. Colin O'Donoghue was Man of the Match but it could have been any one of the players, they were all absolutely superb and if we can keep them together we can build for next season with confidence, we are all a year wiser and I have learned a lot from this. I haven't decided yet about coaching next season, I'll have a couple of weeks off first. Well done the boys !"
Ryan Sutton, wing forward Rumney 1st XV : "The conditions suited us and all the boys were back so we had loads of confidence and with no pressure on us we threw it about - it was good to just enjoy a game with no pressure. I thought everyone played confidently and it came together on the day. We had a lighter pack and we wanted it more ,so we came out on top. It has been a cracking season and it was great of Steve Ford to step in and take over the coaching - because of Steve we stayed up and we are all looking forward to next season - bring it on !"
