A last minute change of venue meant that
this game was played on the firm, springy turf of the Cardiff University ground
and Rumney started with urgency, second row Emyr James claiming good lineout
ball, winger Lewis Fox bursting infield, and outside half James Thomas, scrum
half Chris Milton and centre Andrew Carlson weaving through narrow gaps. Props
Charlie Gale and Matt Russell set up a powerful platform from the start with
second row Michael Kelly and No8 Dyfrig Rees in fine form, and the home pack
pushing the visitors backwards at the first scrum. Beddau outside half James
Balfrey replied with lengthy kicks but these were well handled by Rumney full
back Ciaran O'Sullivan, and in the twelfth minute quick thinking hooker Michael
Feneck tapped the ball and set Thomas off through the opposition defences to
link with centre Tom Daley who sprinted in for the opening try. A good period
followed for Beddau, who took play deep into Rumney territory but were unable
to turn possesion into points despite the home side conceding penalties. Visiting
centre Daniel Palk impressed in midfield and with No8 Glenn Slater as the pivot
for a number of moves, scrum half Craig Warman kept play close to his forwards
and threatened to break through, but the home defence was sound and counterattacks
by Fox and co-winger Lincoln Plummer relieved the danger. The Rumney pack comfortably
contained the opposition and gav
e the opportunity
for flankers Paul Bull and Matthew Way to exploit gaps and take play back into
the Beddau half, but in the thirty seventh minute Balfrey landed a penalty to
give a halftime score of 5 - 3.
After the interval more hard work by Kelly, Rees, Gale and Russell restablished Rumney's forward platform but Beddau started to play a wider game until they conceded a yellow card and the home side pressed their advantage with multiple phases of forward pressure. The visitors maintained a solid scrum with Warman continuing to probe and second rows Chris Chorley and Chris Dundy keeping play tight and moving forward when in possession, but a second yellow card reduced their number to thirteen. For Rumney, No8 Adam Brake took the field and immediately caused havoc with mighty forward bursts and prop James Harris took over at prop, maintaining the solidity of the front row. Rumney were slow to exploit their superiority of numbers but eventually created space for Feneck to make another excellent run and supply Daly with the pass which enabled him to take play to the Beddau tryline and from the ensuing scrum Brake picked up and drove through three tacklers to score a fine try. Thomas added the conversion and Rumney Captain Paul Niblett marked his return from injury with a spell in the centre. In the sixty sixth minute another superb break from the base of the scrum by Brake saw the ball sent out wide to Plummer who was unstoppable in his sprint to the line. Hooker Neal Ritchie and scrum half Chris Miller came on in a tactical switch and both players ensured that Rumney's impetus was maintained, Mr Marfell-Jones' whistle eventually bringing the proceedings to an end with a scoreline of Rumney 17 Beddau 3.
Steve Ford, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "After three defeats we knew this was going to be a tough game for us, but although it was windy, the firm ground suited us, particularly our young, enthusiastic and pacey backs and we knew we had to get some good phase ball for them to use. We started off ok, against the wind and going through the phases but after fifteen minutes we seemed to die off and lost two scrums near the Beddau line. It did feel comfortable today though, we had the upper hand in the scrums and lineouts and just needed more quick ball, but Beddau slowed it down with their rucking and mauling. When we had quick ball we showed what we can do but there were costly handling errors in scrums and lines when we were near their line, and to be fair to Beddau they stuck at it and never gave in. After three losses I have to say to the boys 'Well done, we're back on the road'. We try to improve every week but it is difficult when you don't have a run of games during the Six Nations Championship. Now we have to get back to regular training and playing to prove that we are a very good side. It was nice to see Paul Niblett have twenty minutes, and a special mention goes to Matthew Way who had a superb game, was quick to the breakdown and tackled everything. The Man of the Match was Michael Kelly whose carrying and defence was immense and who put in some really big hits."
Paul Niblett, centre Rumney 1st XV : "The conditions dictated most of the play today, with Beddau kicking the ball deep to keep us in the corners. Tom Daly scored a nice try from a James Thomas break and we had the better of it up front, the pack was outstanding and drove Beddau back two or three times. I am very happy with the win, the performance of the whole pack was very good, they carried and tackled well, and Michael Kelly was excellent."
