The teams resumed where they had left off at Parc Abercynon in October and produced another pulsating and exciting game, full of open play and spectacular tries. It was a firey start from Abercynon and although Rumney matched them with counterattacks, after five minutes visiting centre Gareth Davies split the defence and put fullback Huw Davies in at the corner. For Rumney, fullback Paddy O'Neill, scrum half Ben Morris and centre Matthew Maclean set up attacks into Abercynon territory and from a close range lineout flanker Ryan Sutton gathered well and was driven over for his side's first try. Maclean's outstanding touchline conversion put Rumney into a 7 - 5 lead after ten minutes and in the eighteenth minute, with Sutton supplying more excellent lineout ball, the three quarters cut loose and winger Henry Amadife powered his way over for another try. Rumney lock Michael Kelly gathered well from the restart and set up possession from which Morris and fly half Danny Clark quickly moved the ball wide to No8 Chris Jones. Jones' clever overhead pass deceived the Abercynon defence and allowed centre Paul Niblett to break forty metres upfield before unloading to Sutton on the burst, who drew in the remaining defenders and fed back to Niblett to cross at the posts for a brilliant try. Maclean's conversion took the score to 19 - 5 and with Kelly, props Rhodri Hanmer and Charley Gale, hooker Neal Ritchie and flanker Ryan Fenton driving hard at the opposition Rumney seemed to be heading for victory, particularly when Maclean added another long range penalty to stretch the lead to 22 - 5, but Abercynon forwards Shannon Raki and Geraint Turner were also now making more of an impact on the game and slack Rumney tackling allowed the visiting centres to put outside half Matthew Turner over in the corner for a try which he converted himself. The home side were soon back on the offensive however when more quality lineout possession by Sutton started a movement which swept back and forth across the pitch before Paddy O'Neill slipped a neat pass to Hanmer and the dynamic prop raced over to score, taking two defenders with him. With half time approaching, Matthew Turner issued a warning of what was to come when he conjured up a spectacular solo try and conversion to bring the score to 27 - 19 at the interval.

The attacking play resumed after the break with Nathan Trevett and Fenton using possession well for Rumney and Chris King and Geraint Turner hitting back for the visitors. Davies continued to find gaps and with weaknesses appearing in the home defence line, wing Daniel Hitchings slipped three tackles to score a good try in the corner. Abercynon set up more threequarter moves and with Rumney conceding a series of penalties, Matthew Turner kicked two penalties to take his side into a 27 - 30 lead. With only five minutes left on the clock and with lock Andrew Gardner and hooker Michael Feneck keeping play tight in the forwards, Sutton again took clean ball in the line and an effective drive took play to the Abercynon line where Kelly broke away with Hanmer and Sutton and scored the decisive try. Maclean added an injury time penalty and Howard Hopkins' whistle brought an excellent game to an end with the final score reading Rumney 35 Abercynon 30.

Jim O'Brien, Rumney RFC : "A wonderful advertisement for Division 2 rugby with forwards and backs combining throughout the entire game. At one stage Rumney looked like they were going to run away with it until Abercynon came back and took the lead, but Rumney just deserved their win. Once again Ryan Sutton ruled the lineouts, the whole pack performed very well and there was particularly good refereeing by Howard Hopkins."

Dave Escott, Rumney RFC : "In some respects this was a game we did our best to give away, from 22-5 up to 22 all, to 27 - 30 down. We played far the best rugby but it was a comedy of errors at times. Rumney can beat any side in this league but it was hard to believe we made so many mistakes, with poor passing and a shocking tendency to kick away possession in winning positions. When we played the attacking rugby which we are known for, we were very good but we went to sleep at times and there was a lack of confidence. It was nevertheless a good win over a talented side at the top of the table, there are not many teams who can get the better of Abercynon. Paul Niblett and Ben Morris were very impressive and all three props played well. Chris Jones and Ryan Sutton were very, very good and I was also impressed by Andrew Gardner and Michael Kelly. Referee Howard Hopkins had an excellent game too."
