Immediate pressure by Rumney found them deep in the Pill twenty two where they had the first attacking lineout. Second row Emyr James took clean ball to start a controlled drive and with prop Craig Fitzpatrick protecting the second phase possession, hooker Colin O'Donoghue fed scrum half Craig Smith whose rapid pass to outside half Danny Clark sparked a backs movement in which full back Gareth Bowen shrugged off tacklers and looped with centre Paul Niblett to send wing Paddy O'Neill in at the corner for the opening try. Clark's fine conversion put the visiotrs into a 0 - 7 lead after five minutes but in the fifteenth minute the home side struck back when, despite crunching tackles by James, Bowen and flanker Matthew Way, along with determined defence from prop John Leadbeatter, Rumney were caught napping at a close range tapped penalty and Harriers' outside half Greg Lloyd darted through to score. Accurate kicking by Clark and fast following up by winger Michael O'Neill immediately took Rumney back deep into the Pill half of the field where, in a lineout variation, Way gathered and set up the drive, second row Michael Kelly picked up and fed No8 Stuart Coles who was unstoppable on his powerful burst over the line. Showing a constant willingness to attack, the Harriers lodged in the visitors' half where impressive flanker Ross Palmer threatened with breaks from the base of the scrum but in a loose maul Rumney winger Andrew Carlson ripped the ball from the opposition forwards and set off on a blistering thirty metre run linking with Clark and centre Anthony Jones to feed Captain Niblett, the centre gratefully receiving the scoring pass but still having a lot to do as he raced in for his side's third try. Once again Pill applied pressure but found Jones and Carlson ready to counterattack from defence and as the game swayed to and fro, the home side enjoyed a sustained period in the visitors' half leading to a try by centre David Layshon and conversion by Palmer which brought the first half to a close at 12 - 17.

The second period started with Rumney again on the defensive but benefitting from Fitzpatrick and O'Donoghue's ability under the high ball, second row Paul Bull's tackling and Way and Coles preventing attacks from the base of the scrum. Further out, Carlson and Bowen also pulled off significant tackles and Clark relieved threats through his line kicking, but ten minutes into the half, following a period when Rumney missed tackles and suffered from handling errors, Palmer landed a penalty to bring the scores even closer at 15 - 17. In the fifty fourth minute James again secured good lineout ball in the Pill twenty two and O'Donoghue and Fitzpatrick started a controlled drive, taken on by Kelly and prop Darren Fenton and completed by Coles, the outstanding No8 capping another excellent performance with his second try. Rumney now stepped up their attacks, Smith's sniping play and delivery allowing Clark to run the show and in the sixtieth minute the outside half slotted his first penalty, adding a second four minutes later when Pill transgressed in an attempt to stop another Darren Fenton burst. The home side responded well however, taking play back to Rumney but the visitors were now disrupting attacks and gaining balls against the head, giving Way and flanker Ryan Fenton more opportunities to counterattack. Leading 15 - 28 Rumney secured a five metre attacking scrum from which replacement scrum half James O'Sullivan fed Clark who, supported by Niblett, Bowen and Jones set up a maul near the posts. O'Sullivan again spun the ball out to Darren Fenton who drew in two defenders and supplied James with the try scoring pass. The closing period found Pill camped near the visitors' line but with the Rumney pack now pushing the opposing forwards backwards, Coles controlling the rear of the scrums and O'Sullivan and hooker Michael Feneck putting in hard tackles, the home side was unable to score and Jerrard Hamer, who had demonstrated excellent control of the game all afternoon, brought the proceedings to a conclusion at Pill Harriers 15 Rumney 35.

Mike Peard, Forwards Coach Rumney 1st XV : "Overall, to come to Pill and win with thirty five points on the board, you have got to be pleased. We had a really good week's training, concentrating on skills and scrummaging, it was a complete preparation for today. Our game plan was to play running rugby from the start and we scored a couple of good tries but after ten or fifteen minutes we got involved in a forward slog with lots of mauls and Pill disturbing our ball. We were also missing first up tackles, we let it happen and as a result we missed two or three try scoring opportunities. We spoke at half time about how to rectify things, about the need to organise our defence and concentrate and needless to say, the boys did what we asked. There were big hits on the gain line by Craig Fitzpatrick, Michael Kelly and Matthew Way and we switched on and started playing again, taking a lot of balls in the scrum. I was pleased with the result, we need confidence in our ability to play the full eighty minutes. The front five did a lot of unseen work today, Craig Fitzpatrick, Colin O'Donoghue and Michael Kelly got through a lot of graft. Stuart Coles had a very impressive game too, scoring two tries and putting in a mature all round performance, his work rate is immense. The Man of the Match was Matthew Way who also had a huge workrate and put in massive tackles."

Paul Bull, second row Rumney 1st XV : "A good physical game, we edged it with flair and skill. When Pill Harriers were attacking we weathered the storm and were in control for most of the game, their pick and drives were good but we marshalled them well. The front row scrummaged brilliantly and Matthew Way's workrate and tackling was excellent."

Roger Powell, former Coach Rumney 1st XV : "I would say it was a game of two very different halves. As I saw it, things were pretty even up front but the Rumney backs were superior."
