Scorers for Rumney : M.Wood try, T.Price 2 conversions

Narberth continued their highly successful start to the season by defeating Rumney at the Lewis Lloyd Ground with a try count of six to one. Outside half Simon Daniel put over an early penalty for the Otters but Rumney fly half Tommy Price kicked two penalties to put his side in the lead as half time approached. With the visitors now seeming to be taking control of the game, the home side suddenly struck back with two tries in three minutes, centres Elgan Vittle and Andrew Bowen cutting through the opposition defences to touch down and secure a shock 17-6 interval lead, Daniel having converted both scores.

No 8 Gareth Bennett battered his way over from a five metre scrum to give Narberth a good opening to the second half, Daniel again converted. Rumney started a short revival when flanker Matthew Wood crossed for a try but Narberth regained the upper hand when speedy left wing Nick Jones outpaced the visitors' defences for two long range tries and shortly after right wing Daniel Gravell raced in for another try. Daniel converted all three and cemented Narberth's position at the top of the table, while Rumney still wait for their first points of the season.

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "Although losing to a good Narberth side, I didn't think the score reflected the game. The team battled for the full eighty minutes and put together some fine passages of play. Once again we let ourselves down by not turning pressure into points but we must look to our next game against Beddau. Man of the Match for Rumney was stand-in second row Gavin Lucas".

Dave Escott, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "Narberth is the best side we have played this season, the changes they made did not weaken the side at all and whereas we did not take our chances, they seized every opportunity to score. On the occasions when Mark Addis and David Willey made breaks there was nobody to support them, when Narberth made similar breaks they made sure they finished them off with tries, their support work was far superior."

Roger Leyshon, Rumney RFC : "Narberth's support play was really good, their whole squad played as a team. Rumney had skillful individuals but they were not playing for each other. Support play was lacking when some breaks were made, there was no backing up but Narberth showed the way by having strength in numbers backing up players when they broke loose. Rumney outside half Tommy Price played his part well and second row Gavin Lucas was a real handful but the side was badly lacking in true speed and penetration behind the scrum. With a few more games under their belts they'll start playing as a team, they are not together yet and a few players were out of their depth today. The Narberth squad was really strong and their replacements did not weaken the side."

Roger Leyshon

David Gooding, Rumney RFC : "The game was, shall we say, entertaining. Rumney are a very promising young side and were a bit flamboyant at times. Gavin Lucas stood out as a fine player. Visiting my caravan at Noble Court, I seem to see Narberth more often than Rumney now !"
