Strong Rumney pressure and good tackling kept the visitors in the opposition's half of the field for the opening period and attacking play from scrum half Craig Smith and centre Anthony Jones put them into strong positions but mistakes at the lineout allowed Mountain Ash to break out and overcome the initial threat. The first scrums clearly showed that the visitor's pack would control this area of set piece play, and more well judged chips by Smith and forceful running from the base of the scrum by No8 Stuart Coles took the action back into The Old Firm's territory where they were penalised for offside. Rumney outside half Danny Clark kicked the opening points after twenty minutes but home No10 Matthew Parfitt replied quickly with a penalty which tied the score at 3 - 3. Mountain Ash launched attacks and impressive full back David May came close to a try but more forceful tackling, particularly from Clark and wing Michael O'Neill prevented scores and hooker Michael Feneck , prop John Leadbeatter and flanker Ryan Fenton set off on significant counterattacks. Prop Craig Fitzpatrick was showing outstanding ability in anchoring the scrum and supported by mobile second rows Michael Kelly and Emyr James, and Matthew Way at flanker, the Rumney front five were beginning to give the home forwards a torrid time and in the fortieth minute the unstoppable Coles controlled a forward drive superbly to crash over for the first try, Clark's conversion giving a half time score of 3 - 10.
Five minutes after the interval Rumney scored their second try after a great touchline breakout by full winger Phil Carlton who gained seventy metres before setting up second phase for his backs and a penetrating burst by full back Paul Niblett who, when stopped just short of the line, made the ball available for centre Gareth Bowen to gather well and cross the line. Mountain Ash scrum half M.Thomas had played well throughout and was a clear danger man but it was the Old Firm's outside half Parfitt who slotted a fiftieth minute penalty which was followed up by a blistering interception try by full back David May, Parfitt's conversion bringing the sides nervously close at 13 - 15. Bowen and Jones were proving constant threats in the centre, and Niblett increasingly influential with Fenton and Kelly storming forward, taking play into scoring positions. James took excellent posession in a close range lineout only for the home side to drag down the rolling maul, much to the displeasure of Mr Hamer, and when the offence was repeated the referee, who officiated expertly all afternoon, had no hesitation in heading for the posts and awarding a penalty try. In the sixty second minute O'Neill gathered a loose pass and cut back in field before feeding Clark who scythed through six tackles to score a brilliant try and conversion to place his side 13 - 19 ahead. Replacements Colin O'Donoghue and David Evans maintained Rumney's tight grip on the forward exchanges and Ryan Sutton obtained fine lieout ball but Mountain Ash conceded nothing and in the seventy second minute worked a clever blindside move to put winger Jamie Collins over, Parfitt adding the points to make it 20 -29 before Rumney scrum half Chris Miller's perfect delivery gave Clark time to put over a quality drop goal and conclude the proceedings at 20 - 32.
Steve Ford, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "We started out knowing that we would have to adjust our playing style to adopt more of a kicking game and that Mountain Ash would be physical in the tackle area, so I asked Danny Clark to kick a bit more than usual. Unfortunately that did not pay off, it is not our game, we are a running side and we depend on our set piece in order to be able to play a fifteen man game. We missed a couple of lineouts in the first half, overthrowing one or two critical ones, but the first scrum was very good and our forward drives were excellent so we knew the opposition would have no answer. The backs did not have much ball because of our kicking game, and by then we knew we had to change our approach so we altered our plan and decided to go back to a strong set piece and fifteen man rugby. When we do that we are a very good side, when we keep the ball it is a pleasure to watch and in the second half we scored some fine tries - Danny Clark's was certainly a bit special ! We have to play consistently for longer periods not just ten to fifteen minutes, we are quiet for too long, and to stay in the top three you have to perform to a high standard every week. It was difficult at Mountain Ash they tended to spoil our game, we have got to be streetwise and push the ball wide with confidence, but we dropped the ball and passed forward, we need to stop making silly mistakes. Rumney is going to be a very good outfit but there are still a few areas to work on, mainly our lack of concentration when we switch off and stop playing for long periods. It was quite a convincing win today, Mountain Ash never stopped fighting, but well done to the boys, it was not outstanding but we got those vital three points. Ryan Fenton and Stuart Coles carried very well and Craig Fitzpatrick, with his first start of the season, made the set piece very solid. John Leadbeatter was everywhere in the rucks and mauls and his tackling was superb - he is an absolute pleasure to coach and was voted the Man of the Match."
Craig Fitzpatrick, prop Rumney 1st XV : "It was excellent today, there are a lot of young boys in the side with loads of enthusiasm and that's fantastic to see. The forwards went very well, setting the tone from the first scrum which we won against the head, and from then on the opposition knew that they would lose the scrums. John Leadbeatter had a very big hand in all the scrums and our young scrum half Craig Smith was excellent, in general the boys all played for each other, it is nice to see the club going back to its roots."
