Excellent defence work from Rumney full back Phil Carlton and captain Paul Niblett stopped any early pressure from The Old Firm and with prop John Leadbeater, flanker Ryan Fenton and centre Anthony Jones putting in crunching tackles, Rumney soon drove their hosts back and camped in their territory for virtually the whole of the first half. Mountain Ash's most impressive forward, No8 Ryan Savage, threatened to break out but the visitors maintained their pressure through controlled forward play by Charley Gale, Michael Kelly and Jamie Braine, close linking between hooker Neal Ritchie, flanker Ryan Sutton and Carlton, and effective lineout work by Sutton and Braine. No8 Stuart Coles was again in outstanding form at the base of the scrum, controlling the rolling mauls, charging forward and almost scoring on a number of occasions. In the twentieth minute a stunning break by talented Rumney outside half Andrew Carlson was stopped just short of the line and when Mount conceded a penalty in order to stop another powerful break by Gale, it was Carlson who kicked the points to give his side a 0 - 3 half time lead.
A change of shirts inspired Mountain Ash to launch more vigorous thrusts after the interval but Jones and Rumney wingers Luke Khan and Joey Offside were strong in attack and defence and Offside looked particularly threatening when he had the ball in hand. Scrum half Chris Miller was elusive and probing behind the pack, but as the poor conditions deteriorated even further, a skilful threequarter move set Carlton away down the tramlines to almost score, and with accurate kicking by Carlson, Rumney again spent long periods near the Old Firm's line. In the seventy fifth minute however, neat play by home lock Richard Griffiths led to Mount's first second half incursion into the visitors' twenty two and a controlled drive from a lineout resulted in hooker Craig Evans splashing down for the only try of the match. Rumney replacements Michael Feneck, Lee Miller and Kevin O'Connor tried hard to get another score for the visitors but it was to no avail and Evan's try proved to be the decisive score.
Steve Ford, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "In the pre-match talk I said that there was no pressure on us, we were very relaxed and just went out to enjoy it and play rugby. We started off playing with the wind and gained a lot of territory but the conditions did not suit us and we could not throw the ball around. We are a light and mobile side and although the scrum and line was ok in the first half, our mauling was not as effective as usual, Mountain Ash did a good job on us to stop our mauling. We were 0 - 3 up at the turn around but after we missed our kicks I had some doubts. We had our fair share of possession but we did not see much good quick ball and did not go wide enough. In the changing room at half time I asked for 'More of the same' but it was tough, they battled hard through the second half and had all the territory again but we did not cross the gain line as much as we should have. It was an entertaining game with few penalties and good discipline, but we needed another score and then with ten minutes to go we were pressing and a mistake took us back seventy yards. We lost our throw and they drove us over, it was disappointing for the boys but it is over and done with and we have to pick ourselves up. It is a tough old game and we have got to be tough with ourselves, but I am more than confident that these boys can get there, we need a clinical finish. I am pleased with the team spirit and work rate, Jamie Braine and Michael Kelly did their fair share and a lot more today, Ryan Sutton had a good game and Ryan Fenton was outstanding, back to his best, and just beat Ryan Sutton to the Man of the Match award."
Ryan Sutton, flanker Rumney 1st XV : "The boys dug in and played alright but we couldn't turn pressure into points. The conditions were poor but we stuck at it well with Anthony Jones, John Leadbeater and Andrew Carlson having very good games."
