A determined and committed Llantrisant side presented Rumney with their second defeat in one week, at a windy Cefn Mably Park where the home side adapted best to the conditions and rarely allowed the visitors out of their own half. Although virtually all the first half was played in Rumney territory, the visitors did take scrums against the head and create turnovers, but Llantrisant fullback Owen David and wingers Kevin Oliver and Tom Botwood managed to return the ball with interest and keep their forwards on the offensive. Rumney flanker Ryan Sutton was so dominant in the lineout that the home side soon stopped challenging and concentrated on stopping the subsequent forward drives and in the fifteenth minute Llantrisant centre Jon Williams put over a penalty for the opening score. Rumney gave away more penalties and were put under pressure for another lengthy period but No8 Dyfrig Rees and flankers Sutton and Matthew Way gained ground whenever possible and fullback Gareth Niblett kept a solid presence as the last line of defence. The visitors continued to make errors and a fumble in midfield allowed Botwood to take play to within metres of the Rumney tryline, and from this position play was switched wide until outside half Ian Worgan unexpectedly switched the ball inside, finding Botwood in full flight to score under the posts. Williams added the conversion for a 10 - 0 lead but Rumney responded with a rare incursion into the Black Army's twenty two where prop Craig Fitzpatrick's excellent drive nearly brought a try and despite the powerful support of second rows Emyr James and Paul Bull, Way and hooker Michael Feneck, the pack were unable to finish off the move and another penalty allowed Llantrisant to clear their lines.

The opening period of the second half was similar to the first forty minutes, play being lodged mostly in the Rumney half and home scrum half Glenn Holloway probing and switching, on one occasion almost putting hooker Dean Evans away for a try on the wing. In the sixty fifth minute Williams slotted another penalty but Rumney were entering their best phase with Sutton continuing to control the lineout, props John Leadbeatter and Charlie Gale settling the scrum, No8 Adam Brake unsettling the opposition and Anthony Wilson's introduction adding to the forward impetus. The Rumney threequarters attempted to break free, wingers Andrew Carlson and Lincoln Plummer making ground where possible and centres Paul Collett and Tom Daly finding gaps in midfield but the Llantrisant defence remained sound and dangerous counterattacks required James and Feneck to backtrack and prevent further scores. Visiting scrum half Chris Milton worked well with outside Joe Deacon, whose fine line kicking kept Rumney going forward but in the face of the rigid Llantrisant defensive line, more turnovers and penalties were conceded. With the clock running down Sutton gained clean lineout ball and Deacon fired out a long pass to Collet whose neat overhead pass put Plummer clear and the flying winger crossed in the corner to revive his side's hopes of victory. Deacon's excellent conversion brought the score to 13 - 7 with five minutes remaining but the Black Army regrouped and a strong break by Botwood took play back into the Rumney twenty two where the visitors again conceded penalties and in the closing minute Williams took the points with the last kick of the game, the final scoreboard reading Llantrisant 16 Rumney 7.

Mike Peard, Forwards Coach Rumney 1st XV : "It was a disappointing result considering the side we had out, we thought we would be able to get a win on the road today but Llantrisant deserved to win it. In the first half we had good quality lineout ball and took two against the head, but we did nothing with the ball. There was no pattern to our game today with single runners getting turned over, we tried to put things right at half time and we did perform better in the second half. It was nice to see John Leadbeatter get a full eighty minutes under his belt and the Man of the Match was Michael Feneck who is playing all the time, we can't rest him, and he is leading from the front with one hundred percent effort."

Adam Brake, No8 Rumney 1st XV : "There was a lack of urgency today, we weren't switched on, but the second half was better than the first, sometimes it's just the way things go. We didn't secure the ball enough and we let Llantrisant come through and didn't give Chris Milton the platform and protection he deserved, but Matthew Way, John Leadbeatter and Ryan Sutton still had very good games."

Gwynne Griffiths, Fitness Coach Rumney 1st XV : "Llantrisant is a difficult place to play with the wind and the muddy surface, and because of injuries and people coming back, the Rumney side is disjointed, but in general Llantrisant wanted the game more than we did. We created the chances but didn't actually convert them. In the second half we opted to kick for touch four times and got nothing, yet we have a lad in Joey Deacon who can kick goals from the touchline, our decisions were poor at times. Our young half backs need to be given options and we did not play with enough depth to get us the tries. Unit skills up front won the lineouts and scrums, giving us a wealth of primary possession which we didn't convert. Forward play is relatively easy because it is very structured, but back play is difficult and we haven't been able to put a settled back division together. We thought we had Captain Paul Niblett back but he got injured, as did Geraint Manning and Danny Clark earlier in the season, but today Adam Brake did give us some decent forward ball."
