The division's two promoted teams met in the match which was to decide the championship and Rumney took on the league leaders from the start with flanker Ryan Sutton controlling the lineouts, half backs Chris Miller and Andrew Carlson running the show and setting up centre Gareth Bowen for an early break which was only stopped feet from the tryline. After six minutes, following excellent hard work by hooker Colin O'Donoghue, Miller hoisted a difficult high kick which the Llantrisant defence fumbled and winger Michael O'Neill snapped up the ball to cross for the opening score. The visitors continued to dominate with No8 Stuart Coles and flanker Matthew Way strong in attack and decisive in defence, but by the fifteenth minute Rumney were starting to give away penalties and home outside half Ian Worgan reduced the lead to 3 - 5. Llantrisant themselves were also guilty of conceding penalties and in the twentieth minute Carlson added three points, but shortly after the restart The Black Army broke from the back of a scrum and drove forward, flanker Gavin Groves picking up and going over for the try, Worgan's conversion taking his side into the lead at 10 - 8. Rumney conceded further penalties and free kicks but Llantrisant were unable to put any more points on the board and the teams reached half time with only two points between them.
Rumney gave away more penalties and made further errors at the start of the second half and in the fifty first minute Llantrisant gathered in a line out and, keeping the ball tight in the forwards, drove over for their second try, prop Chris Worgan touching down to stretch the lead to 15 - 8. The visitors' defence remained difficult to break, Coles, Way and Sutton stopping a number of close range attacks, and second row Michael Kelly and props John Leadbeatter and Craig Fitzpatrick successfully driving upfield. From an attacking lineout second row Emyr James claimed good possession and Leadbeatter set up clean second phase, Carlson fired out a long pass to centre Paul Niblett on the burst and the Rumney Captain raced in for the outstanding try of the day, Carlson's conversion tying the scores at 15 - 15. Four minutes later the outside half put the visitors back into the lead with a well struck penalty and with the introduction of prop Charlie Gale and hooker Michael Feneck, their pack maintained parity with the opposition. Injuries to influential Rumney fullback Phil Carlton and to Niblett saw strong running centre Anthony Jones and the versatile Anthony Wilson take to the field, and with only eight minutes remaining Llantrisant switched their play to a tighter forward effort. When they did spread it wide Rumney winger Joey Offside brought off a try saving tackle but the visitors' tendency to give away penalties allowed Llantrisant to take up positions in attacking range. Rumney had been plagued by uncharacteristic lineout errors all afternoon and with only minutes remaining another lineout mistake gave the home side the put in at a scrum. Llantrisant scrum half Jason Alford unexpectedly broke down the blindside to link with speedy winger Glenn Holloway and a neat handling movement saw Groves dive over for the try which gave a final score of 20 - 18 and decided the league positions, Llantrisant becoming champions and Rumney runners up, both sides being promoted to Division 1 for the 2007 - 2008 season.
Steve Ford, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "Our game plan today was to play fifteen man rugby, and try to crack Llantrisant by spreading it wide. We knew they were good at forward and in the scrums, and on a hot day with a hard ground that's what we did. In the first half the plan worked and we only gave away three penalties, we were disciplined in the rucks and as soon as we had good ball Paul Niblett and Gareth Bowen split them, but we failed to hold the ball over the gainline and did not keep possession long enough. I felt comfortable at half time, only 10 - 8 down and with the slope to come, and although Llantrisant went further ahead our heads never dropped, and when Paul Niblett went under the post putting us 18 - 20 in front, I knew we were more than a match for them. As time went by we stopped playing and Llantrisant came back at us, wheeled a scrum, got around the blindside and sneaked in for the last try. I was disappointed today because I felt we were good enough to get something out of this game, but we worked hard and this was undoubtedly our hardest game of the season. It was a good game and credit must be given where it is due, Llantrisant are a very good side. And full credit to our boys, we have had a really good season and with three games to go we need to pick ourselves up. The commitment today was superb, it is my job to rally the team again, bandage a few up and regroup. Ryan Sutton was excellent in the lineout today, he covered everything doing his job and a lot more. The Man of the Match was Matthew Way."
Danny Clark, outside half Rumney 1st XV : "It was very tight, we took it to them at the start of the game but then gave away silly penalties. Michael Kelly had a good game and carried well and Andrew Carlson played very well. We were good with the ball in hand but giving away penalties was the main problem and we had difficulties in the lineout. Matthew Way did extremely well in defence and at the turnovers."
Charlie Gale, prop Rumney 1st XV : "We were unlucky today, we put pressure on up front and sorted out the scrum and lineout but Llantrisant proved how good they are, they haven't lost a game this season and the penalty count against us was huge. Our backs played very well and Matthew Way was all over the park."
