An even opening period saw both sides spreading
the ball and Rumney coming very close to scoring when a swift passing movement
featuring flanker Ryan Fenton, second row Chris Jones and prop Rhodri Hanmer
was only stopped a metre from the try line. With flanker Carl Barker taking
clean lineout ball and No8 Stuart Coles in fine bullish form, the visitors looked
dominant but Llantrisant made use of their sharp scrum half Glenn Holloway and
fast running centres Kevin Oliver and Mike Jones to strike back and it was only
clever defensive work by Rumney prop Paul Douglas that prevented a home try.
After such a positive start Rumney began to lose some possession in turnovers
and in order to stop a scything run by Llantrisant outside half Ian Worgan,
gave away a penalty which Worgan himself slotted to open the scoring after thirty
minutes. Three minutes later visiting outside half Paul Nash kicked a difficult
penalty from a muddy patch of the field to bring the teams level at 3 - 3 and
despite good attacking and defensive moves from both sides, the score remaine
d the same at the
interval.
Rumney winger Matthew Miller started the second half with a blazing run down the touchline and from the subsequent lineout Barker seized clean possession to start a controlled drive which finished with hooker Neal Ritchie cleverly smuggling the ball over the line to score the first try. Nash added the conversion for a 3 - 10 lead but within minutes The Black Army hit back through a try by Worgan who took a quick penalty and caught the Rumney defence napping. Worgan's conversion brought the home side level again at 10 -10 but in the sixtieth minute, following another storming break into the opposition twenty two by Coles, and rapid passing through the backs, Rumney Captain Paul Niblett fired out a long pass to hooker Michael Feneck who beat off desperate tackles to score wide out and restore the lead at 10 - 15. It only took two minutes for Llantrisant to again come back, this time through an interception try by Holloway, who had anticipated a Rumney counterattack and snatched the ball to touchdown under the posts, his conversion putting his side back in front at 17 - 15. Rumney again launched attacks with Coles, Matthew Miller and scrum half Chris Miller finding gaps and multiple phases drawing in defenders, but in the seventieth minute home winger Matthew Griffiths successfully struck another penalty and the game finished with The Black Army victorious at 20 - 15.
Steve Ford, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "We started well, the scrum and lineout were fine and we were doing everything ok. We had a lot of possession but didn't seem to be able to score, with the last pass often letting us down. The second half started well, we gained a lot of territory and scored a very good try. Our biggest problem is actually scoring, when we do score we switch off and we must try to kill sides off, but it is building up now, I've been in the job for four weeks and I really feel that we are getting there. We must cut out silly penalties, our overall, general workrate is very good but we have got to learn to close down games and win them. Morale is high and there is a good mood in the side, we are moving in the right direction but we do need to win games, that is paramount. It is a long hard campaign all the way to May, but we'll get there, our mistakes are getting less and less. Stuart Coles' come back continued today, he had an excellent game and was the Man of the Match, and Paul Nash at No10 had a good game too. We will plod on and fight for everything, it's going to be tough but all in all, we'll get there."
Chris Miller, scrum half Rumney 1st XV : "It went alright but in the first half we panicked a bit and lacked composure. Paul Nash did a good job at No10, Neal Ritchie scored a good try and we had a great lineout. We just panicked, apart from that we deserved to win. Matthew Miller and Paul Niblett were dangerous in the backs, Neal Ritchie put in a strong performance, Ryan Fenton was back to his best and Stuart Coles carried well."
