The curtain came down on Rumney's 2002-2003 season with a visit to West Wales and a windswept and often rainsoaked Church Bank. Llandovery finished the Division One season in third position after facing ferocious resistance from a young Rumney side that competed strongly throughout the match. In a tense first half Llandovery's Slovenian international Luka Plesko was the only try scorer.

The second half saw the Drover's pack exerting more control. Scrum half Rob Walters then ran in two tries followed by one for wing Gary Davies. The home side's lead was extended by a try from wing Jamie Roberts, converted by fly half Gareth Jones. Rumney crossed for a late try when prop John Stringer broke away to score.

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "Although we lost to third place Llandovery they were made to work extremely hard for their win. A superb defensive display from the squad in the first half resulted in us changing ends at 13-3. During the second half with the wind and rain on their backs Llandovery showed why they are placed so highly in the table, but in fairness to the Rumney squad, they competed to the end and scored a very good try of their own when prop John Stringer sprinted some forty metres to outstrip the Llandovery defence. (Well okay 20 metres !!)  Man of the Match for Rumney was flanker Michael Kelly."
