Ferocious forward play immediately took Rumney to the Caerphilly line, second row Michael Peard, No8 Dyfrig Rees and prop John Leadbeatter battering there way into the heart of the defence and scrum half Chris Milton constantly sniping and probing, and in the fourth minute visiting captain Michael Feneck burrowed over for the opening try. The pace was maintained with Peard, second row Paul Bull, and prop Craig Fitzpatrick controlling the forward exchanges and drives, and flankers Anthony Wilson and Ryan Sutton dominating the lineouts, while in midfield centre Paul Collett and fullback Tom Daly made powerful breaks, but in the fourteenth minute a sudden counterattack took play the length of the field and from a close range scrum home flanker Rhys Watkins crossed for a try. Outside half Dean Watkins' conversion established a 7- 5 lead and heralded in a period of scrappy play when both sides committed many errors. Collett continued to impress in midfield and co-centre Gareth Bowen came close to scoring, while Fitzpatrick gained plenty of possession in the loose, but Caerphilly were gradually controlling longer passages of play and moving upfield, and in the twenty sixth minute Watkins increased the lead to 10 - 7 with a successful penalty. At a lineout deep in the Rumney half, Feneck ripped possession and outside half Andrew Carlson burst through the opposition with a brilliant break, linking with wing Licoln Plummer, who took a difficult pass and sprinted away for the try of the day, but the home backs were by now also starting to click and when Rumney strayed offside Watkins kicked a second penalty to give his side a 13-10 half time lead.
From the restart Caerphilly went straight on the offensive and with Rumney conceding one penalty after another, Watkins added further successful kicks, stretching the lead to 19 - 10. The visitors brought on prop Charlie Gale and second row Emyr James, who worked closely with Sutton and Bull to establish a position five metres from the home try line and won a scrummage from which Rees and Milton cleverly worked the blindside to put Daly in at the corner. Rumney continued to attack, hoping to regain the lead, replacement scrum half Chris Miller driving his pack onwards and Collett and winger Lewis Fox finding gaps, but another counterattack took Caerphilly to within five metres of the visitors' line and from the subsequent scrum No8 Stefan Edwards controlled the drive and scored the try which sealed a home victory by 24 points to 15.
