Scorer for Rumney : D.Clark 2 penalties
Slippery conditions led to poor handling and speculative kicking and although Rumney managed to territorially dominate the opening period, indiscipline resulted in Brynithel being awarded a series of penalties and repeated opportunities to clear their lines. The Owls brought themselves slowly into the game by keeping the ball and gradually moving forward and although the visitors attempted to counterattack whenever possible, particularly through No8 Chris Jones, Rumney kicked away possession and conceded turnovers. Ten minutes into the half, a powerful midfield burst from centre Ian Blackburn was only stopped by Brynithel killing the ball and outside half Danny Clark slotted the penalty to give Rumney a 0 - 3 lead. Clark was responsible for a number of very good breaks but Brynithel used their heavier pack to push the visitors back in the set scrums and were successful in preventing any further first half scores.
The home side started the second half with
more careful forward build ups and after Rumney gave away more penalties for
killing the ball, Brynithel chose to scrummage rather than kick and ten minutes
after the interval, No8 and captain Nick Meredith finished off a push over try
to put his side into a 5 - 3 lead. Further penalties allowed Brynithel to again
camp in Rumney territory and in the sixtieth minute Meredith was once more on
hand to complete a second pushover. Gavin Hayes' conversion increased the lead
to 12 - 3 but within five minutes Clark had reduced the deficit with a penalty.
The final quarter found Rumney launching attacks whenever possible, with one
spectacular break by C
lark nearly resulted
in a try, but more penalties were given away and consequently none of these
promising moves proved successful, so Rumney suffered their third defeat in
a row with the final score reading Brynithel 12 Rumney 6.
Gafyn Cooper, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "A good effort but we failed to
take things from the training field into the game and we lacked discipline.
Anthony Jones played very well and so did Man of the Match, Danny Clark."
Danny Clark, outside half Rumney 1st XV : "It was there for the taking but poor discipline and choppsing let us down. We lost it by making silly mistakes again. Chris Jones had a good game and Ian Blackburn worked very hard."
