With a driving rain at their
backs, Beddau battered the Rumney defence for the opening minutes
but could find no way through and decisive tackles by full back
Andrew Carlson, scrum half Chris Milton and centres Paul Niblett
and Gareth Bowen made sure that the visitors' line was not breached.
The first scrums demonstrated that the outstanding Rumney front
row of props John Leadbeatter and Matt Russell and hoooker Michael
Feneck would not be taking any steps backwards and with excellent
counterattacking by flanker Ryan Fenton and second row Joe Mills,
winger James Egan and outside half Danny Clark all finding early
gaps, play switched to the Beddau half of the field. The home
side worked a number of effective moves from the base of the scrum
using No8 Chris Bundy but more gaps were being created by visiting
wing Tom Daly and No8 Dyfrig Rees, two players who were to make
decisive contributions later in the game, but at times Rumney
appeared too enthusiastic and strayed offside and in the twenty
third minute Beddau ouside half Gareth Walters opened his account
with a penalty. Rumney flanker Ryan Sutton again dominated the
lineout throughout the match and took conrol of restarts and while
home second row Robert Jones did well in securing his side's lineout
ball and setting up drives, the visitors' defence could not be
budged and even made a number of turnovers. In the thirtieth minute
Beddau scrum half Lee Scarfe hoisted a speculative up and under,
regathered the bouncing ball and fed flanker and Captain Steve
Cole who burst over for the first try. When Walters added the
conversion Rumney were ten points down with half time approaching
but they were now shading all the set pieces, Russell was causing
problems with his forward breaks, Mills and Rees winning fine
possession in the loose, and Milton bringing his backs increasingly
into play, so it came as no surprise that Beddau conceded a penalty
in the thirty fifth minute and Clark cut the deficit to 10 - 3.
Beddau returned to the offensive but met up with more soli
d defence and excellent tackles
by Rees, second row Anthony Wilson, Niblett and Egan, and clever
ripping and smuggling from Russell. In the fortieth minute Rumney
turned over Beddau ball and a snappy threequarter passing movement
set Daly away, the winger rounding his man and sprinting seventy
metres for a sensational try, and when Clark slotted the conversion
the interval scores were level at 10 - 10.
The second half found Rumney in highly disciplined mode, Clark cunningly working the slope and the elements, Carlson breaking through the centre and Geraint Manning replacing the injured Bowen and adding power on the burst from full back. Beddau enjoyed another good period of play but tended to kick away possession to some of Rumney's most dangerous players and in the fifty fifth minute Rees secured a loose drop out and blitzed his way down the wing, casting aside tacklers to score a superb solo try which Clark converted for a 10 - 17 lead. The home side also increased the number of errors they were making and in contrast, the continued methodical approach of the visitors found them making very few errors and achieving further turnovers. A superb midfield break by Fenton nearly brought a try and forced Beddau back into their own twenty two where the Rumney forwards tied them down. Flanker Matthew Way, prop Calvin Maynard and second row Terry Gee were introduced and each player got straight into the thick of it and added more, concerted pressure while Egan's strong running became an added threat out wide. The home side continued to impress with the tight work of their pack but indiscipline gave Rumney relieving penalties and in the seventy fifth minute Clark landed a well taken drop goal. As time ran out, Beddau launched attacks from all positions but could not add another try and had to settle for a last minute Steve Robinson penalty which secured a well earned bonus point, but a delighted Rumney side celebrated their first league win at Beddau and their most disciplined performance of the season.
Steve Ford, Coach Rumney
1st XV : "We made a special effort this week to up the
tempo, following a lot of preparations in training on Tuesday
and Thursday. It was always going to be tough at Beddau but we
knew our preparation was spot on and that's how it proved to be
today, everybody was focused and listening. A big part of the
pl
an is to get the boys mentally right,
it is half the battle. We started the first half going uphill,
playing a tight controlled game against the elements. The forwards
were immense, we lost a few lineouts because of the conditions
but our game plan was to keep it tight and not play it out until
we were in wide positions. Before half time Tom Daly found a bit
of space and he went seventy yards for a superb try which really
lifted us. In the second half, going downhill with the elements,
we played our best, controlled forty minutes of the season. I
take my hat off to the forwards, we were under pressure on our
line but our defence won us the match, especially the tackling
of Paul Niblett who had an outstanding game. We'll take it one
game at a time, I don't just want to survive, that's negative
and I know that we will do well with this great bunch of hard
working boys. If we prepare like this for every game we won't
be short of the target, we can win on the road and we now need
to give our home supporters something to shout about. This was
an absolutely great win, I am so proud of the boys, they stood
toe to toe with one of the best sides in the league and they came
out on top. Dyfrig Rees and Ryan Fenton were awesome and Paul
Niblett was the Man of the Match."
Chris Milton, scrum half
Rumney 1st XV : "It was very physical and the forwards
did really well. It was encouraging but we weren't clinical, in
the first half we were on top and dropped off, but then we came
back even better. When the ball was slung wide we cut Beddau apart
in the backs. Michael Feneck and Big Joe Mills were very strong
in the loose and then Dyfrig Rees went up the blindside like a
winger to score a great try."
