Bargoed started the game with all out forward
power play but Rumney weathered the storm and after the first ten minutes began
making inroads into the opposition territory. In the fifteenth minute home outside
half Jamie Howells opened the scoring with a penalty and although Bargoed again
stepped up attacks and tried spreading the ball wide, the visitors' defence
was excellent, though centre Anthony Jones had to retire injured and the backs
reshuffled. In the twenty fourth minute Rumney second row Anthony Wilson gathered
well in a lineout and scrum half Chris Milton darted forward to set up a second
phase forward drive, then centre Tom Daly broke down the wing before the ball
was switched wide by quick thinking wing Lincoln Plummer and centre Luke Ford's
perfectly delayed pass allowed full back Geraint Manning to power through for
a try, taking a number of defenders with him over the line. Another good period
followed for Rumney but No8 Chris Jones suffered a shoulder injury and had to
leave the field and in the thirtieth minute another promising attack was turned
over on the home ten metre line and the Bargoed backs linked in an excellent
handling movement which was rounded off with Howells crossing in the corner.
The outside half added the difficult conversion but within three minutes Ford
had also slotted an excellent penalty, so the scoreline was a tight one at 10
- 8. The Rumney front row's defensive performance was immense against a much
heavier pack and props John Leadbeatter and James Harris, along with hooker
Michael Feneck, disrupted the home forwards and put in telli
ng tackles. As half time approached home No8 Lewis
Wayman started a powerful drive from the base of a scrum and intricate passing
between forwards and backs led to scrum half Mike Roberts cutting through for
a high quality try, Howell's conversion bringing the first period to a close
at Bargoed 17 Rumney 8.
A few quiet words of inspiration at half time from Coach Steve Barber, seemed to fire up the home side and within five minutes of the restart another fine handling movement between backs and forwards resulted in a try for centre Rhys Humphries. Howells duly obliged with the conversion and in the fiftieth minute Ford kicked his second penalty, but soon the big Bargoed pack exerted another sustained period of pressure and from a close range scrum, influential playmaker Wayman grounded the ball for his side's fourth try, Howell's conversion stretching the lead to 31 - 11. In the sixty sixth minute Wilson again obtained clean lineout ball for Rumney and a neat inside pass from outside half Andrew Carlson put No8 Dyfrig Rees through on a superb drive which split the defence and set winger Lewis Fox away on a race for the corner. The wing succeeded in his difficult task, scoring in the corner and Ford added a mighty touchline conversion. Visiting forwards Michael Kelly, Matthew Way, Paul Bull and Andy McCormack were increasingly probing forward, setting up phases and pursuing disruptive footrushes, Way's tackling cutting down any attempted breakouts, and with Daly and Ford sealing the midfield, the home side found themselves on the backfoot for long periods. In the seventy fourth minute Wilson again obliged at the lineout and with strong support from prop Calvin Maynard, a tightly controlled forward push took play close to the Bargoed line where hooker Neal Ritchie produced his trademark, low-level and virtually unstoppable drive over the tryline. With six minutes remaining the intensity of play was maintained, Bargoed determined to hold onto their now narrow lead and Rumney seeking to snatch a win, but an excellent game came to an end at Bargoed 31 Rumney 25, and Rumney being rewarded with a bonus point which took them up to an impressive fifth position in the Division One mid-season table.
Steve Ford, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "We played Bargoed in the first game of the season and knew that they were very strong in the pack and since they were several stones heavier they dominated the scrum area. Although they did control the game for long periods, it was a fairly even contest. We battled well in the first half but we fell down by trying to play too far out when we should have been looking to gain territory. We made some mistakes which Bargoed scored tries from but we worked hard, dominated broken play and scored some good tries ourselves. I have never come across anything like the fighting spirit in this side, particularly the players' determination to play for one another. I can not speak higher of the boys, to come to title contenders Bargoed and get a bonus point was nothing less than we deserved, I can't be more proud of them today. The performance was good, we rucked and tackled well and hard, and I am glad we came away with something. My son Luke Ford had his first game under his father today, getting involved not only on the rugby side but also continuing our family connection with Rumney. Chris Milton had a big game and the Man of the Match was Dyfrig Rees."
John Leadbeatter, prop Rumney 1st XV : "We struggled up front but battled it out well, there was good communication shown by the boys and we came away with a point, which a lot of teams would be happy with at Bargoed. The back row and the backline all put in good performances, with Matthew Way on his best form and Luke Ford playing very well."
