The game was only a minute old when Bargoed
produced a simple move at the back of a lineout and from it centre Greg Carlow
burst over for the opening try and outside half Jamie Howells added the conversion.
Rumney battled back and scrum half Chris Miller came close to scoring but loose
support play allowed Bargoed to hit back a
nd only a fine tackle by full back Gareth Niblett
prevented another try. With the home side launching multiple phases of play,
Rumney managed to keep them out until the fourteenth minute when Howells evaded
a number of tackles and set up Carlow for his second try. Howells' conversion
increased the lead to 14 - 0 but within minutes, following consistent forward
pressure from prop Paul Douglas, hooker Michael Feneck and No8 Chris Jones,
lock Michael Kelly powered his way over for Rumney's first try and ten minutes
later, second row Jamie Braine gained clean lineout possession, linked with
Stuart Coles and then prop Charlie Gale and flanker Barry Phillips, to take
play into the Bargoed twenty two where Miller switched right and supplied centre
Paul Niblett with a superbly delayed pass which gave the Rumney captain enough
room to split the defence and score his side's second touchdown.
The halftime scoreboard read 14 - 12 and Bargoed restarted with open attacking play. Towards the end of the first half Rumney had started to lose some turnover ball and had thrown out loose passes, and although their defence was effective, the number of missed tackles was increasing. Winger Matthew Miller and centre Anthony Jones showed power and aggression when they had the ball and full back Phil Carlton turned defence into attack with a superb break upfield, leading to a successful penalty by outside half Paul Nash which took the visitors into a 14 - 15 lead. Rumney's joy was short lived when Bargoed took play into their twenty two and from a Rumney scrum snatched possession and spread the ball wide where weak tackles allowed the move to continue and right wing Lee Pearson crossed in the corner for the try. In the sixtieth minute handling errors gave Bargoed a midfield scrum and from quick possession Carlow cut through and set up co-centre Dan Humphries for a try. It only took the home side a short time to add their third try in ten minutes when influential forwards Jones and Mart broke tackles to supply Howells with the pass which sent him under the posts and although Rumney spent most of the final quarter of an hour in the home twenty two, they could not turn territory into points and Bargoed ran out winners by 33-15.
Steve Ford, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "We started very poorly and were seven points down after fifty seconds, we missed too many first up tackles and had a non existent defence. After being 14 - 0 behind we settled down, scored a nice try and started to believe in ourselves. We struggled against Bargoed's big pack, they taught us a lesson in the scrums but twice we had the nudge on them, though their overall forward play was immense. 14 - 12 down at half time, I made the boys believe in what they were doing. Silly mistakes are costing us a lot of yardage, if we can cut down on errors and not panic, I am sure we can give teams like Bargoed a harder game. We competed well and it was a good performance overall but in a ten minute patch Bargoed scored three tries for a flattering scoreline. A great tap on the back for our boys, they showed a lot of guts all the way to the end, we gave them more than a game today. Barry Phillips was the Man of the Match."
Dave Escott, Rumney RFC : "Our forwards did very, very well and we matched Bargoed up front, but their backs were methodical, with more penetration. Prop Paul Douglas was outstanding, Jamie Braine took a lot of good lineout ball and Stuart Coles kept the fight going. Rumney didn't give in and fought to the end."
Barry Phillips, flanker Rumney 1st XV : "It was a good game but we were just bad in patches, with a few missed tackles here and there. There are a couple of things to work on, the forwards were excellent, the front row had a stormer and the back row kept us in the game. Paul Douglas had a good game and so did Matthew Miller on the wing."
