Rumney found Division One title favourites Aberavon in ruthless mood at the Talbot Athletic ground but were fully in contention for long periods of the game. With the Wizards seeking to maintain their nine point lead over Pontypool in their challenge to win a third successive title, they found the visitors' defence hard to break down and only managed to cut loose in the final quarter. It was Rumney who scored the first try when a good passing movement led to left winger Mark Addis crossing in the corner in the tenth minute. Addis' recent sparkling form was evident again later in the match when he set off on an elusive dash along the wing which resulted in another in form player, hooker Michael Feneck, crossing for another excellent try. Andrew Thomas collected a hat-trick of tries for Aberavon with Kristian Owen and David Hawkins getting two each, their side clocking up a total of twelve touchdowns in the game. Right wing Chris Arnold wrongfooted the whole Aberavon defence when he jinked in for Rumney's third and final try.

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "The side showed great determination having to play against the league leaders for most of the game with fourteen men. The score going into the final quarter was just 18-13 and we had played some good rugby and defended very well. The loss of a player eventually took its toll and gaps started to appear, which the opposition took full advantage of.  Although the eventual score line shows a heavy defeat the boys can hold their heads up as Aberavon, for the majority of the game, knew they had a battle on their hands. Rumney's Man of the Match was hooker Michael Feneck."
